The Euros Fans Thread

It is so frustrating to watch, on paper we have such a strong team, and as individuals for their respective teams, they are indeed all top class/World class players. So why oh why can they not seem to gel as a National team? We have seen tantalising glimpses of what might be possible....

We have deffo improved over recent years, with significant runs in the last two major tournaments and as others have said, its too early to write us off yet.

The positive that I do take from this so far, is that despite the poor performances, we are still top of the group!
To win a major tournament you need all the factors to fall into place, the players, the coach, the opposition, the draw, and a little bit of luck. Maybe we have had our little bit of luck, but now need to step up to the plate and deliver a good / better performance.
I'll still be watching whatever happens, as I'm a footie fan, as well as being a fan of most other sports too.

Those Dulux drying fans still can't help themselves and have a poke at the fans and the team, despite claiming they have no interest, don't watch it, think its pointless, all overpaid nancy boys, etc, blah, blah, blah.....

He's just too 'nice' ... The team is a reflection of that it seems. The Trent experiment never worked yet he keeps trying it. It's clear the system with Kane staying high doesn't suit him nor the team. The ball goes up, he fights with defender, he loses, ball comes back. Rice doesn't trust Trent so he sits low, Trent sees that and he sits low too as he really doesn't know what role he's playing (or can't).
Defenders see that and they drop.. All of a sudden we are in our box defending. Who in the England squad plays this way week in week out?? Not Walker, not Stones, not Saka, not Foden, not Bellingham, not Rice, Maybe Guehi does (which is why he's looked good in comparison) but he plays in a team that breaks fast. England break like a tugboat turning, slow and ponderous.
I coach youth football and we are constantly being told by the FA to be 'only positive' but yet the top team in the land play negative football Head bang 65

There's also zero press from the front 4 so the opponents get an easy out ball, again leads to the midfield sitting off so they can't get picked off but ends up with the whole team in a low block.

Southgate after the match saying they brought Gallagher on to bring pressing energy 🙄 absolutely pointless having one person doing it from the middle of the pitch as they'll just get played around.

Trent is getting lots of grief for looking lost, but he's brought on for his long passing & then 90% of the runs are coming short/deep.

Couldn't agree more.
As bad as we were, the Dutch and French aren't showing much tonight either.

We're at 60 odd minutes, and the French look like England, all sideways and backwards passes, ponderous on the ball at the back with the rare little glimpse of endeavour now and again going forward. And they're the favourites.

I've also never understood why players, who play in a specific area or role for their usual team, and presumably are picked because they play well doing that, are then put in the National squad but in a different position or asked to carry out a different role, WTF is that all about?

Looks to me that Southgate is caught in the trap of picking the best players rather than the best team. Alf Ramsey claimed to only ever pick the team, not the players. It worked for him.

Wish sometimes the goal keeper would go long, because some of those roll outs are suicidal.

I don't understand the whole "unnatural position" argument regarding handballs.
Defenders have now taken to doing a Prince Philip, with their hands behind their back when tracking a forward in and around the box. Surely if the ball strikes the hand in that position, it must be a foul? After all, there's nothing "natural" about having your hands behind your back while playing football is there?

Reminds me of when Scholes was played on the left wing back in the "golden generation" just to fit him in somewhere, rather than play an actual left winger. That never worked

Sadly Scotland got what they deserved.

3 matches and only 4 shots on target in nearly 300 minutes of football.

Last night Scotland had to win so there manager played 5 at the back and in 99 minutes they didnt have not 1 shot on target Homer face palm

Personally I am gutted for Scotland. Yes they lacked the quality in the last third to progress but for Hungary to 'nick' it in the last throws was brutal. I didnt think it was a pen at first but after watching the slow mo replays I think it was a pen. VAR up to it's usual standards I'm afraid.

I'm a big Rooney fan, I think he was a great player. He's also turning into a decent pundit. But, seeing him tonight on the Italy/Croatia game, I can't help picturing in my mind.....well.....you've all seen those photos of snakes that have swallowed a pig and look like they're about to burst....

He's morphed into Mr Creosote.

Do you think this Chap is being a bit optimistic 😂View attachment 508707
Every tournament there is a dude that is too optimistic - one of the lads in a previous company got a company logo tattoo as he is earning well and as such “successful”. well needless to say a year after he had it there was the big rebranding, different logo and colours etc - I always said I am not a warrior or have roots that associate me with putting colour in my skin other than the birth given one 🤷🏽‍♂️
