I'm as disappointed as many others BTW, i've met GS several times, and he's a genuine fella who wears his heart on his sleeve, what you see is what you get.

Credit where credit is due but Southgate chose his style of play and it has got us to this point after the Roy Hodgson disaster but now its obvious its now time for new ideas before the word cup qualifiers start in march 2025.

As much as Southgate is a good guy amd it's obvious that the players like him. In fact I defy anybody to find a single England fan who wouldn't want to see him lift a trophy. The fact is he has failed. The measure of success isn't nearly getting there or improving upon the last guy, it's winning. Its clear that he doesn't have whatever it is you need to get your team over the line. It's nit all his fault, far from it. We all think the England players are the best and should easily win but they simply aren't. Spain and the Spanish players were better. That starts at youth level. I have coached up to U18's level and the amount of coaches I see and hear just wanting to win and not care about player development is criminal. It starts at the very bottom. Small sided games, creating pressure, panic and chaos on players, getting them used to receiving the ball under pressure and in tight areas. We simply don't do enough at grassroot levels.

Nail on head John, and i seriously think that we were "better" at this 20/30 years ago, but this extremely important side of the game appears to have been put on the back burner in the UK, but not worldwide, which is why, in spite of the 2-1 scoreline yesterday, there appeared to be a massive chasm of ability between the 2 sides.

Not sure if we are better or worse than we were 20/30 years ago. I was playing a decent standard back then but can still remember it was about results more than performance. As a kid playing for school, area, county and clubs I can't remember a coach really encouraging me to take balls under pressure or playing Rondos constantly. That's the basis of the Spanish way of playing. Guardiola uses it as a basis for his training too. We need to learn the ball is precious and giving it away is a sin. England's turnover of possession was so evident and eventually costly.

How many of you have applied for the manger's job?
At around £5m a year salary and a budget to employ people to advise and help, who wouldn't want it.
Not Sure what Steve Holland earns but I bet that's a tidy sum too.
The army of coaches, analysts, physios, doctors, nutritionists, administrators and so on.
Where do I sign?

Clearly not going to be me but whoever gets the England reins next the FA and the premier league need to help them far more than they do now. We need more funds for grassroots football, more focus on our youth development. More funds available for coaching development to make it easier and cheaper to become a qualified coach. More investment in local facilities for the kids to train and play on. I live in a fairly affluent area and we do not have a single 3 or 4g facility available for the kids to play on that we do not have to pay a fortune to use privately. It's an absolute disgrace. The council pitches are a joke (clearing dog poo and even having to take a strimmer down on a Saturday morning so the kids can play on it) Not playable in the winter as they aren't fit due to over use and lack of maintenance. Even then they cost an absolute fortune to hire. It all counts towards the football pyramid and getting kids to the top. Need to stop focusing on winning at that level and focus more on being better.
Better coaches make better players who make better teams who then win games as a by product of simply being 'better' than the opposition. Spain are doing that and have been doing it for quite a while now, it seems to be working for them doesn't it.

Don't even get me started on the Premier League V The F.A. That's another debate entirely.

I'll take a stand and say thankyou to Gareth and the team. You did well.
I'm not a big football lover tbh, but I've watched more England games in the last 8 years than before, and enjoyed getting behind them, supporting them.
I'm certainly no expert, and football tactics is not something I could discuss, however, my opinion is Spain were very good at fouling and diving, far better than other teams I have seen.

Got to go for Klopp or Pep.
Which means they'll go for Potter. Please God, not Potter

Said it before best man manager but poor tactician. Next manager needs to be able to harness all the attacking talent we have and not pick 8 defenders and 3 attacking players. Southgate's crowning achievement was to create a likeable squad without egos or rivalry. Can't knock him getting to the semis and finals. Brilliant.

Kane - lots of words written about this. If he needs players around him to do the running then fine. But if you don't pick those runners he's useless. That's where Southgate's major flaw lies . Kane should never have been picked if this was the case.

Grassroots investment ... I'm glad this has now been mentioned by an MP. These top flight academies do nothing for most players. They vacuum up anybody with the merest hint of talent and coach the crap out of them and often turf them out aged 24 without any real experience. And the reason why everyone is now playing this tippy tappy football is that's because all the coaches have been taught the same thing from the same manual. Individuality is wiped out because you must at all costs keep possession.

There's no doubt you'll end up being a better player and person by going to your local lower league club. If you are good enough you'll get picked up with a couple of hundred games under your belt. Loads of in games experience and at least some knowledge of how to live a decent life without a Ferrari on your drive.

100% agree on Southgate & Kane. Southgate needed assistant coaches with some balls to actually challenge him in private about his playing style/team selections, instead of mates and yes men.

In regards academies, it's not long ago they were being credited for the amount of top players they were producing so it's not all down to them. Yamal has been at Barca since he was 7, Nico Williams at Bilbao since 11 and a local academy before that, and they are very individualist in their play but within a system.

I'd say it's more an issue with agents and the money in football that players at 18/19 are encouraged to stay at a big club academy rather than leave to play at a lower level to get competitive game time despite the fact if they aren't already breaking into the first team they won't make it there. Too scared to get off the gravy train

Say what you want about his defensive style but he pulled us out of the disaster that Roy Hodgson left the team and improved the team ten fold to where it was in 2016.

There was a really good article at the weekend about what happened pre-Southgate and how inter-team rivalries and egos destroyed any chance of England doing well. Southgate pretty much told the players it doesn't matter how good you are, if you don't fit the team, you don't get picked. I do like his style.
