Quietest Moderator?

The Coul-tec Q1 was the best performing moderator on a sub 12 airgun I have ever owned. They were suitable for rimfire too but they were a limited production run and not made anymore...

Behind that performance wise was the original HW but everything else is for the most part 'six of one and half a dozen of the other' so I now just use a Donny Fatboy and a Donny Tatsu mainly because they are quite short so I don't need to remove them to case my rifles and they don't look too bad either.

From my own experience the air arms qtech is the quietest mod I have ever tried. They produce a softer sound than the hw mods and a lower pitched noise than the hugget ones. I have a mini one on my tx and you can hear the pellets fly if it’s not windy.

Weihrauch standard are really good, but equally I'd say any of Blades Peace Pipes By Ian Blade Newman. I've got couple of his fat boy mods on loud guns Walther, Kral and the only noise now is the action. Got one his BXL on a DRS that pushes it down to only hearing the action

I've not bought one for years as my Taipan came fitted with a massive, reflex moderator as standard.

Last one I bought was a Daystate 0db. That was pretty good. I made a sound like hot, melted butter falling off a toasted muffin and landing on an open page of poetry in summer......

Nothing wrong with haircurlers, having studied acoustics at Uni there are a lot of factors that aid effectiveness.

Expansion chamber sizes & spacing is very important & materials are another. After 2 years of making many prototypes, I ended up with Delrin as proper engineering grade polymers are far better at sound deadening than metals, they are tough & they take a scratch better than blued or anodised metals.

Over the years I have made various units out of steel & aluminium & you get a slight "ring" to them. Its barely audible, but I have noticed dogs & the odd bunny have reacted to what otherwise has been a very quiet silencer. I don't get that with a unit machined out of solid Delrin bar. Its a vey deadened noise.

Some say the threads don't stand up as well to heavy use as Delrin is not as hard as metal. True, but it depends how you treat them. I have a 10 yo Delrin MWSS200 with a female thread that goes on a couple of my rifles regularly. I am careful when I screw them on & off, but I am the same with metal units too. Threads can be fragile regardless of the material, if care isn't taken with them.

It’s probably why my foam-garbed silencers seem more silent, or it could just be my imagination

Regarding foam sleeves, I also like pairing them up with my AR A2 buffer tubes

I find A&M moderators very quite, that’s why I’ve got them on Four of my PCP’s

Delrin is a solid choice material, and perfect for many applications in the firearms industry.
I purchased this Soundbiter mod in 97/98 when i got my first LR, and it has been on & off multiple rifes ever since, and the threads are still as tight as day 1.
Provided you are careful not to cross the threads in use, and use a bit of grease occasionally, they will last forever.
Considering it's size, weight & very basic construction, this unit is an extremely effective mod for rimfire.

I assumed it was a Wildcat cub the had been modified before I found out about the Soundbiter.

Donny's seem to get a lot of bad press. Never owned one, doubt I ever will.
Seem well over priced for there lack of performance.
Do people buy them cause they look pretty ?

Probably due to the amount of influencer's who are sponsored by them using them as well as looks.

I assumed it was a Wildcat cub the had been modified before I found out about the Soundbiter.

I have tested various sound mods on my LR's, and usually with sub-sonic ammunition.
Back in the day, there was very little choice to be had, but now we are blessed with some maestros on here and elsewhere that can rustle up some fantastic mods & shrouds that are equal or better than the ones that are available from all the big names.

I thought it was a Cub that had the mono core cut off until some one showed me the Soundbiter .

NM in Sheffield do some similar . Not seen how they are inside though.

I don't know why the production of the Soundbiter stopped, they are made from 7 basic components that are available anywhere.

Any idea why they stopped making the Coul-tec Q1 ?, the volume of it is bigger than the A & M Twink.

It was a company set up by a local chap from Bishop Auckland called Mark Coulson. They only operated for about a year. The mod was all metal construction and very good quality so maybe the achievable margin wasn't really viable. I know they were stocked locally at Braddy Stalkers but if he could not get a foot in the door with wider distribution it would have been a very slow burner I guess.

The DonnyFL Tanto was my 1st ever moderator when I came to the US.

It’s well-constructed but not that quiet, and mine has a smaller egress hole compared to the current ones.

I also own an Airguns Use Only (AUO); about the same size as Donny’s KOI and probably about as silent—-or loud

Coming from a pedant when it comes to aesthetics, it is brilliantly-finished—- not a single blemish/ding/scratch to speak of. The anodizing is unique in such a way that the tube matte whilst the base and end caps are satin.

Oh, the threads are also very precise

They were sparingly produced about 5 years ago and sold cheap ($60) by a gent who was quite active at that time.

Sound attenuation could probably be improved were I to wrap its 3D-printed core, but its center isn’t slimmed down:

Been in a few guns and it’s the best so far, Ive a few shrouds that match it but never found a silencer as good

This. I've measured it against many off the shelf silencers and it's best so far. It can be improved but that's then another story.

Another vote for @mattw975 (of this forum) and his custom moderators.
If you want an excellent silencer which is truly silent, the MWSS200 is the one to have.
