I’ve recently bought an AirMaks Katran Pro Compact .177 and I’m trying to decide which moderator to go for.

My priorities are:
Reducing the noise as much as possible for the neighbours.
Keeping the rifle well balanced.
Looks.
I’ve done quite a bit of reading already, but there seem to be lots of different opinions. Some people recommend DonnyFL, others Weihrauch, Huggett or Air Arms, and there doesn’t seem to be much objective testing to compare them.

I’d really appreciate hearing your recommendations, particularly if you’ve had the opportunity to compare different moderators on the same rifle or under similar conditions.

I’m also curious whether you’ve found that the “quietest” moderator depends on the rifle it’s fitted to, or whether certain moderators consistently perform well across different PCPs.

Thanks in advance. I’m just hoping to make the most informed choice I can before buying.
 
Given your selection and matching to your rifle, if not bothered about the overall look, any will suffice.
If you want to go short, therein opens a can of worms.
Maybe go the custom route, there are those on here that make pretty much what you need 👍
 
From your list, the HW mods are the only ones that i have tested on my PCP's and i rate them both very highly - between the 2 of them the XLK shades it, but not by a big margin considering the difference in girth 😳 the bog standard HW mod is really a very good unit for the.price point.
I've never used any of the Donny FL offerings, but they seem to get very poor press on here, and i have always got the impression that they may be a bit gimmicky.
 
Over the years i have tried many different types, style, sizes, designs. And have now found a make/design form a forum member the most able one i have ever used. They are called stealth the come in all calibers can be all colours they are big they are cheap and they work
 
quietest for me so far is the reservoir mod but using my own internals not the wool ones(68db), I have got it down to 62db with 6 chambers, a little more with 5 chambers, but also no crack. I would describe it as a light paperback book falling off a bedside table, low thump sound. I have tried a weihrauch xlk. odb stealth, weihrauch standard, some carbon ones different of different lengths and dia, plus a few others all either in the higher 60's db or more of a crack than thump.

edit: This is specifically for the katran .177, the same mod is louder on my hw100 when I tried it, I aim as much as possible to specifically set a mod to a rifle, no one size fits all in my opinion.

I'd say a lot of it depends on how rifles are set up
Generally more volume is a good thing, but I've used a SAK mod (designed for .22lr) on some rifles to great effect (Steyr and HFT500), but on others the SAK was really loud
 
As you are fitting it to a .177, I would be looking for something calibre specific. All the donny mods I've encountered have a large exit hole so would rule them out. I've been looking at the Eaglevision offerings lately that have calibre specific inserts, maybe someone that has used one could comment on their performance.
 
I find a lot depends on the gun that the silencer/moderator/suppressor is fitted to, for instance, the mod fitted to my FX Impact Mk2 is freakishy quiet and it is on an empty cylinder. I have a Huggett Astille with an extra chamber section and while it is pretty good, it isn't as quiet as the original Weihrauch.
I also have a couple of Snipe's, one of which is fitted to my wifes AA S200 Mk3 and it is whisper quiet, I have to check sometimes that a pellet has actually left her barrel. The same Snipe model is pretty quiet on most of my guns including my Wildcat Mk3, my Impact Mk2 and my little PP700 w.
I also use a Belita on the Wildcat out of preference because the rifle fits in the case with it fitted and is quiet, not as quiet as the Snipe or Weihrauch but good.
I have several Peace Pipes, again they are pretty good but not Weihrauch good. I had Matt Winser make me a skinny mod for use on one of my Baikal Makarov's manily for a better sight picture that noise control but the same mod on my PP700 w (.177) is pretty quiet too.

In all, I have about 12 moderators and they all offer good levels of suppression on different guns, one mod on one gun is good but on another gun the same mod is not so good.

My BSA R10 Se has the CSS shroud/mod system and I dont't think it's that quiet, it has fart like report from the muzzle (I think it's an un-tuned/standard muzzle report) and doesn't seem to make much difference which mod I use on it when I remove the shroud system.

I did buy a 0dB (long type) and I think it is the loudest of all my mods on any particular gun.
