I've never owned, used or seen one up close - but whenever I see a picture of one, the checkering appears to look all wrong to me - as in it is too small.

Is it a trick if the camera(s) or do they have out of proportion small areas of checkering?
If so can you request that CS up it in size by 10 or 20%?

@Gat Man. Apparently, the CS Checkering on their Stocks are known not to be that great, although like yourself I've never actually seen one in person myself.

But even so, I'm thinking of buying a CS Gunstock sometime in the near future for my HW99s. And If I do I'll be having the stippling applied and not the standard checkering.

Been like this since they moved over to CNC production, Danny, and they're having none of it
The panels are way out of scale and the reason I've always specced stippling

Nah its naff if you ask me the one one the pistol grip is tiny . In my opinion it belongs on a pistol 😁

I've opted for stipple on mine I do have one from the 90,s which has proper proportioned hand cut chequering not the laser beamed etch job they do today 👍

Yep have to agree, the chequering is a bit dodgy for an otherwise excellent product.. Stippling on everything I have bought from them is great 👍

Hi the pistol grip pattern is way too small imo. Here's my hand checkered CS stock my pal @Blackmax has done,it's amazing

Totally agree with both the off putting checkering and for me, limited choice. Also agree that the lower end stock selection is preferable. I have looked a few times at getting one for my 1998 HW95 but for the money it seems to be a choice of the Model T Ford....

'You can have any colour you want, as long as it's black'

I'd much rather save my money and use it for another rifle.

I’ve always thought this; and it’s put me off buying one as I’d have to order it plain and then send it to be chequered and finished by someone else at extra expense.

Also, I can’t for the life of me understand why the forend panels aren’t centred around the stock screw, some even catch the edge of the chequering, which frankly looks shite.

Stippling may be grippy but it’s not to my personal taste, and I don’t fancy spending £300+ on a stock that’s compromised when it could so easily be sorted.

Finally, I gather you can request to have a slimmed down forend, which I’d want on a break barrel, so I don’t know why they don’t offer it as an option.

The designs need modernising really, I’d also get rid of all those sharp points that look susceptible to damage in a field situation.

Stippling or naked for me.
Here's me old 99 naked.

My 97 and 99 are the only guns that have a CS option but I suspect it'd lose the 99s fantastic lightweight, super pointable handling characteristics and I honestly don't see the CS500 sporter stocks being worth the money to replace the similar OEM HW97 factory stock.

Each to their own though of course and your 97 does look good 👌🏻

Never really thought about it but the checkering on my 500 is small. Thing is, small or not it’s infinitely better than what it replaced….

The pistol grip checkering is so tiny that it just does not look at all right to me, and I'd rather it stipled or left plain to be honest.

As stated above - why position the forend checkering there, like that, clashing with the stock screw location?
Doesn't seem to be the best practice to me.
I wouldn't want to pay their asking price for that kind of attention to detail!

The CS500 is a nice stock but is it really any better in use, than the HW97 EM one?

Case in point there - why position the edge of that front panel on the screw???

Agreed
Why ?
Anyone could easily conclude that it's not the ideal design!

Considering the CS stocks can be half the price of the gun, it seems logical to think they might do a bit better than that or at least offer more options on size and positioning of checkering.
Presumably laser cut checkering is done using some kind of software driving it?
If so, surely they are able to tweak it to eet customer requests?

Maybe I'm being unreasonable but I just think they could do a lot better for the asking price.
In the interests of fair play and parity, I've got to say I've never seen or used a gun with any of the CS Stock range and their handling and ergonomics may well make the above grumbles totally null and void!
