CS stocks

What they seem to be saying is it’s hard to alter once laser cut, not that they couldn’t alter the panel size. But if people are buying them as is and not telling CS they want bigger panels why would they change…

Order it plain - then send it to me.

A lot of interesting comments on this thread.

As far as I see it Custom Stock offer a range of stocks in walnut or laminate mainly intended as an upgrade from factory beech stocks, some of which are just bland or in other cases have poor handling characteristics.

These are off the peg offerings with some options for personalising, the sporter style offerings tend to be more aesthetic, the target stocks, particularly the CS1000 is designed to do a job so looks take a bit of a back seat.

I anyone wants something bespoke then go and talk to a more specialist stock maker who can build to your specifications, but, be prepared to pay the price as it is likely to be significantly more than a CS offering.

For me personally the current checkering panels do look odd, particularly on the CS500, but when I have ordered a new stock from them I have opted to have it plain (and unfinished) and re-directed the savings on that into going for a better bit of selected wood.

When I have bought a second hand example I have just accepted what is there.

I would agree with @Craig-P above, if I wanted checkering I would order the stock plain and get him to checker to my preference.

On balance for what they cost, the CS items aren't bad.

I've got 7 or 8 CS stocks and like most things these days the older ones are much better quality.
Their new stuff is getting very expensive too.
I have several CS500's and the LOP varies by as much as 2 inches, recently bought 2x CS1000's & they're both completely different sizes & shapes.
You can buy a Lucas Parsley (LP) stock for similar money now.

I've never owned, used or seen one up close - but whenever I see a picture of one, the checkering appears to look all wrong to me - as in it is too small.

Is it a trick if the camera(s) or do they have out of proportion small areas of checkering?
If so can you request that CS up it in size by 10 or 20%?

Totally agree, it’s not only too small, out of proportion, but it lacks the character of proper hand cut chequering. That’s why I get them unchequered and do it myself. I’m a bit rusty as I don’t do it much now, but it’s a hundred percent better that laser cut. Why not get a chequering kit and try yourself.

This is what I’ve just done for Foxy @foxtrott. First one I’ve done for nearly two years.

I hope CS read this thread…. How much more difficult would it be to extend the checkering to look more in balance with the rest of the stock, especially when it’s done by laser? I’ve seen the speed of this process and it’d take seconds.

Email to CS sent…. I’ll let you know how I get on… 👍

I think you’ll find it’s limited by the machine they have, it only works in two dimensions, in other words it doesn’t go round the grip, it stay’s parallel to the horizontal. I had this conversation with them and they said if they made them bigger it’d stretch the pattern and some diamonds would would be bigger than others as well as being stretched.

They seem quite happy to discuss be interesting if someone buying a new one asked them

@Gat Man. Apparently, the CS Checkering on their Stocks are known not to be that great, although like yourself I've never actually seen one in person myself.

But even so, I'm thinking of buying a CS Gunstock sometime in the near future for my HW99s. And If I do I'll be having the stippling applied and not the standard checkering.
Here’s mine mate for a bit of reference

Makes sense. Although I’ve seen laser cut stocks on YT that can to it. Maybe CS needs a more sophisticated machine.

👍👍👍

They’re normally machine cut, not laser.

Give it a go yourself Jay, you can get tools over here, they often turn up on eBay.

I now get mine from USA as I have a friend who has goes over there regularly to see family and brings them back for me.

I appreciate that a curved grip panel is tricky to cut but on my 99 it isn't too out of proportion, maybe a bit small. The forend wouldn't take much to improve though.

I might as well, I’m pretty good on the tools and I’ve found a place that sells the tools needed.

Hey, thanks for your advice, always happy to get involved. 👍👍👍

There'll always be someone on here to help you, advice costs nothing on here.

I got to a stage where my results were really good because I'd done quite a few, but then other priorities overtook and I rarely do it now, only for friends and it now takes longer and ice lost a bit of the accuracy.

Such a cracking forum for info. I’m hovering over the ‘order now’ button on Brownhills website for a set of checkering tools. You’ve inspired me!

Just hope it doesn’t go too pear shaped. 😂😂😂

You’ll be fine, but if practice to start with and then lots of patience. Like anything a lot of it is in the prep.

I’m from the ‘measure twice cut once’ old school. Steady as she goes. I’ll probably start on some old off cuts before I let myself lose on the stock later on. Looking forward to it TBH. 👍👍👍

I'm happy enough with mine, but if I order another I would not have the front chequered, and possibly none at the pistol grip either.
