What a gun! The HW99s

I am not greatly enamoured of my HW99.
Sacrilege!

It is not a bad gun at all - reportedly "tuned" by Deleted member - and all works well, no graunching etc.

But it is not as nice to shoot as my HW77/97s etc - feels a bit crude in comparison - possibly similar power in a smaller, lighter rifle?

I will not give up on it yet but - now that the novelty of a new gun has worn off - it gets far fewer outings than my other HWs, including my HW30.

Chacun a son gout.

Im a 'late comer' to the 'light HW' range. I fist got a SFS HW99S in .22 flavour a few years ago and was surprised how well it preformed for such a lightweight rifle. I then got an early 99S again in .22 flavour and treated it it to a full Vmach / ARC set of glided internals. wow, that turned into one of my favorites, until last September. I'd heard how good the HW30S was and although a bit sceptical, decided to buy one in 0.177 flavour. It was treated to to a re-lube and a drop in TBT kit and the result was one of the lightest, sweet shooting (8fpe) and Accurate rifles (out to 50m) I've ever had. If you like the HW99s, please give the diminutive HW 30S a try, Im sure you wont regret it.

I might detune my Deleted member tuned HW99s with Brit piston seal which was a SFS Imp to around 10 ft/lb it does shoot great at 11.5 but I still feel it can be tamed even further for a nicer shot cycle and easy cocking.

I think I'll need to get one as they sound great but even my wife's HW95 feels too light for me, much preferring the "heft" of my HW80.

Again I'm a big guy and still powerlift but these sound too good not to own/experience and not particularly expensive.

MY hw-99 .22 CAL is my fav springer my hw99 has been fitted with
a welsh Willy kit fitted by Will himself,
itsdead smooth with little recoil, very accurate,
its a keeper.

I’ve currently got a Vortek kit in my 99 - it’s dead quiet, zero twang, and fast shot cycle @ 10.5 ft/lb, but I’ve got a spring coming from @Tinbum to see how soft I can get it to shoot as the Vortek spring is quite stiff to cock and the firing cycle is probably best described as ‘snappy’.

Have you tried a Titan no 10? nice soft shot cycle and easy to cock, be interesting to hear how you get on with the @Tinbum spring, tempted to try one myself 👍

No, recent reports suggest the current titan springs have changed in spec. from those people raved about. I know from experience in a 95 that Nick’s springs are nice - and he includes postage in the advertised price if you message or ring him direct as a member on here.

Nick Simmons uses these springs in all his tunes, also.

Is it a .177 by any chance? I have 2 in .22 flavour which shoots beautifully, however my .177 HW99S is a bit "harsh".
It's the basis of a "work in progress " to try and get the right selection of Springs, seals preloaded etc

Being relatively new to shooting and even newer to this great forum, my experience with choice of pellets is limited. I have tried H&N Barracuda and QYS streamlined 8.48gr. I think the QYS is better.

What are you using in 0.177? Is the HW99s very fussy with regards ammo choice?

Try the lighter end of the spectrum - JSB Express @ 7.9 grains, Bisley LRG @ 7.5 grains or JSB RS @ 7.33 grains.
A lot of " fussy" can be " tuned out" if necessary , by adjusting spring/ velocity, but my 99s ( 3) aren't too particular about what they're fed.

As above, try some lighter pellets. Have a look at the wolfman store, they do sample packs, saves buying a whole tin if your 99 doesn't like them. Great company to deal with and a quick turnaround 👍

Really enjoyed my 99, deburred, degraunched, and fitted TBT kit.
Then I sold it, nothing wrong with it, just wanted something else.

My friend got me into Weihrauch springers with his 99. I went for a 95 to be different but kinda wish I hadn't!
