A welcome distraction from the current domestic situation has been taking my mate's wife to the gunshop to get him a rifle. After trying some of mine (HW80s and 97s) I persuaded him that a 99s would be perfect. It's similar size to the Supersport he had been lent. Also the weight and size wouldn't be a hindrance for his wife either.

So one was on order and we picked it up with some other pieces of kit. The rifle was £299 which I thought was a bargain. In total with pellets, some targets and a nice Sako branded case it came out as just under £400

As its a birthday present I offered to store it here as they are doing some major house refurbs. I also sorted them out with a scope and some other stuff. Now the shop doesn't have a facility to shoot the gun but I thought I should at least try it out. I've only shot a 99s once before which was a few years back when my mate bought one. Thought it was nice handling - it had the previous simpler stock style.

This current one has a more curved and shaped stock which to be honest didn't appeal to me visually. However since shouldering and shooting a couple of tests pellets through it I'm sold. Brilliant rifle and possibly the best of all the HW springers. Yep that's a bold statement. I'm well aware there can be some "graunching" issues but this one felt silky smooth and didn't have the slightest bit of twang.

I'm now trying to work out how I can get one and where can I store (hide) it.

Guess the lesson here is don't judge until you try one!

I have one and find it a little small and light for me (I am a large man!) but there is no denying it’s a good rifle, that is very accurate and is a bargain at the price point. Mine is now scoped but I think I preferred it with open sights. Great fun with either.
Most of my guns are large and heavy (AA TXs, HW97, 98 etc) but I think the 99 will get used a lot more when I get older and start to struggle with the heavier rifles.

Yes I'm very much in the same boat with the cabinet full of 80s and 97s. I think the 99s is going to become my OAP gun!

No argument that the 99 is a great rifle and very accurate but like all things in life, timing is very important. It’s time with me will be in a few years time when I find the larger, heavier rifles too much like hard work. For the same reason I bought my first PCP recently became I want to be able to continue shooting for as long as possible, whether that’s with a TX ,a PCP or the good old 99👍
If need be even a pistol! And I haven’t shot one of those for 30 odd years!

I use my 99 a lot! I love my Weihrauchs (100, 99, 77 and 35) but the 99 comes out for pest control a lot more than the others these days.

My mrs' uncle uses one at his local target club and he can make the club "pro's" wind their necks in when he's hitting targets they're missing with their range guns. 😁

Mine isn't going anywhere! Cracking little things
As a newb I went to local shop to buy a new Gamo springer. The sales person was very helpful and patient. He said better value and less cost was a used HW99s. All I can say is wow. Incredibly consistent and nice to hold. At the moment trying to figure out whether to replace a low quality scope with something better.

Any scope recommendations?

Don't get a massive telescope. Nothing bigger than 40mm objective.

Ideally something like the Hawke Vantage 4x32ao or 2-7x32ao. I got my mate a Nikko Mountmaster 4x40ao and apart from the mounts (which aren't very good) its half decent for £46.

Looks great and nice proportions.

How does that compare to Vector Optics Veyron 4-16x44? A bit bigger than some suggestions? What height in mounts needed and what diameter is the tube? 30mm?
