Upgrades for hft 500

Strangely enough, I was thinking today, how far can you take a HFT 500 before it becomes a waste of money. At what point does the total expenditure become too much and an alternative rifle would be a better option

Mine had some lovely work carried out by Cloverleaf, it set me back £240 but I know internally, it’s shooting the best it can.

I swapped the trigger blade, I purchased a bag rider, I’ve added a Tilly block to the front and today, I had a quote for a dedicated Crusader Bench rest stock £510.00

I won’t go that route because if I did, I’ll be at around £2200 on a HFT500 and surely for that kind of money I’d be looking at the next level up or better second hand

If looking for improvement just what is the ceiling to spend before you’re better off buying something better out of the box or is the gradual additions and improvements all part of the enjoyment journey

In the short space of time that I have been shooting I have realised that some people just love a certain gun and it becomes special to them. If that works for them and they are getting the results that they want, that makes it 'theirs' and they will upgrade and spend on that gun as it isn't going anywhere. Others will chop and change looking for the right gun for them. I have a few rifles and the one that I know I will keep is my HFT500. I turn 60 in a couple of months and I know a joint pressie from everyone is a TM1000 which for me will be pretty special. It may be an upgrade. In cost it will. However, my HFT500 is getting me 250's on a regular basis and is the gun that seems to be teaching me how to shoot properly. It will not be going anywhere. I haven't done anything to it at all and it just works. Having said that I am just in the process of getting a bag rider and block from Chris on this forum...... The madness may have begun :)

The stock bolt issue is seen quite a lot and it certainly affected my aftermarket stock, in my post (#3) above.

I have simply placed self adhesive eva foam around the cradle part of the stock - which is where the stock fixing bolt is located.

The foam is plenty cheap and available in an a4 size sheet from hobbycraft.

Once the rubber buffer is clear of the bottom of the airstripper - everything goes back to normality.

You could also rotate the filler cap spacer around a little - so the rubber bumper / nubble does not contact the bottom of the air stripper. I think that's a poor method though - but will get you out of a bind and help prove everything else is working well.

With the eva foam I've used there's about a 1mm gap below the air cylinder in the stock - allowing it to float and not compress when the stock bolt is in snug enough. I can slide a tenner (bank note, not sanitary product) all the way down from the tip of the forend, all the way to the boilermakers nameplate.

Cloverleaf has used wax impregnated card for the same purpose of floating and spacing. As long as the media used to "pack" the action against distortion is water repellent, conforms easily to the shape of the inletting / action, non marking to the blueing and does not compress too easily - there could be many materials that work.
Thanks for the information. I'm going to try building up the cradle area aswell for a medium term fix. My barrel does sit on the rubber stopper and I think the barrel kind of sticks, ive had significant POI shifts after the barrel has been touched.

I've looked at other higher end target stocks and they have relief channels machined in, im going to try that in the stock build but cannot start for a few weeks.

Its also nice if someone isn't sure what parts are called, it like "Oh thats what its called!".

Yeah i will, but trying to think of a way to get it in the house without the girlfriend seeing is as I wont be able to pass it off as my HW100
It's easy , leave the house with an empty case or slip making sure it looks heavy , come back with a new gun in it 😁

Hi
The stock maker was Markyboy - he's on here.
It's a good stock.
Here is the stock when I first made it, was made originally for my local gun club for using on the hft course but it wasn't getting used so sold it on.

Mark.

That looks stunning. How does the bag rider perform on the glove? Do you get enough friction?

And thank you for the nicely set out post with links. Extremely functional for those, like me, who may want to copy your set up!

Late to the party, but thought I would share. The pic was taken by the previous owner. It now has a Falcon Endura S10i+ and an air arms hamster on it. The modifications are quite extensive:

Huma Reg - vented to air
Edgun digital pressure gauge.
Carbon shrouded barrel with tensioning system.
Barrel threaded by Halifax.
Shortened barrel
Customer air stripper muzzle protector
S500 shortened air cylinder
Walnut MPR FT stock
Fully adjustable butt pad.
Upgraded stainless thumb wheel adjusters.
Rowan trigger blade.
Lightened hammer and some spring work
Biathlon cocking handle
Best fittings quick fill
