Well im currently toying with the idea of getting a Renault 5 E-tech later in the year,most probably on a 2 year lease plan.
I'm still looking for some decent deals & as its going to be a new car with warranty i probably wont go for a maintenance pack

New incentive just announced for Irish drivers of older petrol or diesel cars to switch to fully electric cars.
If you're car is 13 years old or older you can opt to scrap it and get an extra €5,000 off a new EV. This is on top of the €3,500 grant that has been in place for quite some time so overall a reduction of €8,500 off the new price of an EV.
My favorite part of the small print is people that live in rural areas where there is a lack of public transport will be given priority over city dwellers. Of the €10m fund set aside 2/3rds will be earmarked for rural areas with the remaining 1/3 split between the 5 largest cities.
It's on a first come first served basis but it's highly likely more money will be made available next year to encourage more people to make the change.
A brand new Dacia Spring will be about €11k which is a great deal.

The rapid acceleration of EVs is an inherent part of the deal. Electric motors give 100% of their torque from 0 revs. They could lower the gearing to kill acceleration, but then it would be screaming like a banshee at motorway speeds...

That's not how gearing works.
If you geared it for less acceleration it would be revving lower at motorway speeds, not higher.

After weighing up the cost of an EV charger & the double insurance cost compared to my Fiesta im not sure if leasing an EV at 8000 miles per annum fot two years is financially sound.
Maybe im better leasing a new or used Hybrid

How about buying something second hand private sale??
Just a thought but paying for the car seems to be a better idea than paying for the car, the lease company wages, the dealership wages, the mark up, the lease company admin costs then getting screwed over for every stone chip and upholstery snag when you hand it back!

The Spring is about 17k new
The 10k to 11k ones are pre registered by the dealer (because they can't sell them)
They may only have 10 miles on the clock but it's classed as second hand so I'm guessing won't qualify for the subsidies.
The 10k ones also tend to be low spec, the 45hp version and lack the ability to public charge (home charge only)
There are 2 trim levels, Expression and Extreme
The Expression doesn't have fast charging capabilities.

Im looking at all options at the moment.
Looking for a used 3 - 5 year old Ford Puma ST-Line X at the moment its a mild hybrid so may fit the bill and im in no mad rush but the new Renault 4 or Renault 5 are my choice to lease if I go the EV leasing route.

Yeah, that. got a 1.6L Corolla 6 months back, average 60mpg all the time. Really nice to drive and quite swift when required - not having to twat about changing gear is a very handy thing if you need to move quickly. The 1.8L must be quite brisk. Ridiculously reliable also.

Yes, they are about 17k brand new with zero kilometers, unregistered.

There are 2 different grants available for purchasing a brand new unregistered electric car, the first grant of €3.5k has been in place for some time and is available for every buyer.

The new grant of €5k is for people that will scrap their old petrol or diesel car to buy a new electric car, these people will therefore have a total of €8.5k reduction off the price of any new electric car.

My bad. Need to pay more attention.
I read it as you saying the spring was 11k and then you would get discount off that.
Tbh, I would struggle to justify paying even 11k for one. Having been a passenger in a Spring I wasn't impressed They have a flimsy cheap crunchy plastic feel.

The one star crash rating would also be a concern if I was planning to take it outside of 30 limits.
If I was planning to spend 11k on an EV then I think a 3 year old Leaf would be top of my list.
Each to their own though.

Update I've had this about a month, had a hypervolt charger installed and switched to IOG on Octopus .

It's absolutely fantastic and blistering fast , nothing we don't like about the Smart 1 Brabus and I say this as a someone who considers himself a petrol head having owned ridiculous petrol cars in the past .
Being able to charge at home overnight for circa £4 for 220 miles is impossible to ignore, the few times i have used public charging have been a non event also

It looks like they're getting really desperate now to get everyone into the ridiculously unachievable 'net zero' utopia.
