Rabbit clay

Most people start the rabbit target with the barrels to high just as though they were shooting a crossing target. Keep the gun level with the ground which will help to keep the shot low as most people shoot over the top. I was shown this 22 years ago by John Bidwell who is one of this county's very best shots and both my wife and myself still do this simply because it works.
Totally agree with the above,John Bidwell taught me to keep the gun low,cos when the rabbit jumps it’s easier to bring the gun up to it

Loads of advice from shooters on what to do........the best way is to get a coach to watch you shoot your problem target, he should then see where you are missing and correct your technique accordingly 😉

I was told to shoot low because if you do miss slightly in front there is a chance that some shot will bounce off the ground and hit it. That does work on a hard dry surface because I've seen it.

That is true especially when you understand that a shotgun is not a precision weapon and on average it tends to have a 60/40 split pattern, 60% higher than the bead.

I used to do a lot of feretting in the dales and we would shoot bolting rabbits I soon realised they didnt need as much lead as you think.

Trouble with a clay rabbit is they are unaturally fast, they are decelerating fast, and bounce, so I usually try work a point in where it touches the ground regulary and and so work out a point where I want to kill that target so I have my feet and body properly aligned.

keep both eyes fixed on the target gun low just off cheek then bring the gun up to your line of sight where you want to kill that target, remember to swivel with your hips and make your top half and barrels match the speed of the clay get in front and follow through after the shot is fired, concentrate on being smooth and repeatable, fluid, no jerky movements, dont rush, draw the line follow through bang, your wad should tell you if you miss behind, if so increase your lead a little, its only practice, if there was a target that frustrates you just shoot that stand as much as you can until you master it.

I find this the easiest sporting target. Just shoot below the target and you’ll start hitting them. Don’t try to cover them as you’ll 100% go over the top.
