Jeremy wade

Hi all. As a lifelong angler ....(64 this year)...and reasonably well travelled,... (my luggage always includes fishing gear)...I have to agree with squib. Im afraid to say that I personally found his programmes over hyped and for me, unwatchable...I just couldn't stand the hype and forced tension. I watched..or tried to watch..a few episodes in the hope that my first impressions were wrong but no, i found it awful personally. I never really thought he was a particularly good angler either from what i saw on the programme but thats just my opinion and I accept that others opinions may differ and thats fair enough. I certainly wouldn't want to fall out with anyone over it though, or try and change others opinions.. or have to explain or justify my opinion, but for me it's a no thankyou. No offence to Jeremy either as im sure he is a nice chap and all, just the programme isn't for me.
Cheers
Chris.

Hi Chris I was more referring to the man himself rather than the style of the program.

I will give credit where its due hes been all over the world and caught everything they told him to.

And the show was very popular with non fishermen/women so the producers achieved something that can be watched by the masses which I guess isnt easy.

I dont see anyone else the mans age diving with Sharks and live crocs grouper and big eels I mean ask yourself would get dive with a live croc in africa and touch the thing? I mean on one part hes talking to a lady who had her hands bitten off then next thing hes swimming underwater with crocs!!!

You have to see the guy is dedicated and at that age come on man thats impressive, ive watched the entire seasons and there is a lot of things he did in the persuit of fish, I thought to myself naa i wouldnt do that! No way no matter how much they paid me.

Hi Engraver. I respect your opinion and im glad you enjoyed the programmes. The fact that it was a fishing programme that gave angling a wider viewing was what made me persevere with trying to like it, as any positives for our sports are welcome but it's still a no thankyou for me, I literally couldn't watch it i found it so bad.
Cheers
Chris.

Well thats a shame Chris because if you watch the entire series some of his catches are huge specimens, show me another celebrity fisherman from uk who could better his record.

The fish are very real and the guy is impressive for his age to do the things he did thats all im saying.

Most people don’t understand the complexities of catching big fish, the planning, preparation, baiting etc just in the hope of catching that one big fish, sitting for days on end, it’s a massive challenge most pleasure anglers don’t realise.
My lads go carp fishing here’s a couple of fish they’ve caught.View attachment 883422View attachment 883423View attachment 883424

Hi pal nice carp 😃,I agree with you im a all rounder and carp fisherman as well ,I'll admit it's hard work and you need dedication ,loading the van planning for weeks barrowing gear round a big pit it isn't easy and tbh can make you question your sanity lol .But the pay off is a massive high

Hi pal i agree with you as a fisherman myself i love river monsters, of course there's drama thrown in etc that's what makes it a enjoyable watch

Exactly mate shame people dont realise to get a program aired on national tv it has to appeal to the masses, which it must have and still getting viral numbers on the tube.

But the man himself is a legit fisherman and his record speaks for itself, the fish were very real the man is very real.

I heard him on a podcast recently talking about how now he enjoys nothing more than catching small trout on the fly on uk chalk streams, man of my own heart, suppose he really has done everything else and got the tshirt.

The sad thing is people like these wont get the credit whilst they are alive as us brits are a cynical bunch, but then when they die they will award them with something and make a film saying how legendary they were!

Put it this way there wont be anyone that could follow him and better his record for sometime, im not just talking about the fishing im talking about his story and the travelling and the effort, I mean the guy is an ex school teacher drives an old vauxhall he is a humble man, he just loves fishing!

Maybe.. and I'm throwing it out there.... its not really aimed at serious fishermen?

Maybe its aimed at people like me who like a story, learning a bit, seeing the world, different fish, cultures and countries and enjoy being taken away from our hum drum lives for a while 🙂

Thats a good reply pal good on ya 👍

Ive read if anything is going to kill you in the amazon its the insects!

Theres things can bite you that turn into worms and litetally multiply and eat you from the inside out.

Its bad enough getting bit by midges here in summer, I live on a riverbank so when theres a big hatch I cant even hang stuff on my washing line, so yeah he deserves the credit if only for surviving malaria he caught.

I'm not commenting on the rest as if something is drammed up for TV isn't really a reflection on the bloke as an angler.

But if you die from malaria as a celebrity angler with a logistics team behind the programme you shouldn't be trusted with a knife and fork

A quick question for you, Did the crew save steve irwin?

Did JW not risk his life so people are entertained? A few times he could have been brown bread and nothing any crew could have done about it.

The Crew members are not going to be able to take the effects of malaria away? He said it still was still absolute hell for 2 weeks in and out of concioussness, nearly killed him he was lucky.

Dont think it was whilst filming river monsters i think he got malaria just from fishing there on a personal trip in the persuit for fish, appreciate his dedication.

Dont forget this guy was fishing on his own way before this series ever came about and ive seen pictures of him holding monsters from all over the world even when he was in his 20s he would jump on a plane and head somewhere remote often just with his fishing gear.

He even got banned from thailand (i think) as the authorities thought he was a spy! 😆

The guy still only lives humbly drives an old astra, just loves fishing 🤷‍♂️ they made a program he caught a list of giants Just appreciate what he caught simple as that.

Haha man all these guys dicing the guy..

Yet probably only ever caught a few snotty skimmers in the local park pond are all suddenly the experts 🤣

You think you can match the guy Go Try it! I dare you to try it, because you would fall short.

Do people actually think hes an actor or something?? And the fish are fake, appreciate the catches if nothing else.

River monsters is not the only series he did, the guy been fishing his entire life and caught big carp before he was out of nappies 🤣

I'm not taking anything away from his fishing skill or dedication.

He got malaria in the Congo, not sure how long he was in country but there are plenty of anti-malarials if it's under 2m in a year. I was in malaria zones too frequently so long term prophylaxis could cause as many bad side affects as the disease. I worked in the Congo rainforest for two years. I got malaria twice in Sierra Leone living in a tent- it's crap. Main risk was the medic giving me amoxicillin as someone allergic to penicillin so I made sure I wore a bracelet with allergy details, got doxycycline, was back in work in 2 days.

He let the malaria develop until it went cerebral, so either didn't take prophylaxis or left it too late to take the treatment (which is the same tablet as the prophylaxis)

Scary stuff man

There are far more dangers involved in filming in remote places miles away from help average people dont realise.

Yeh, that was my point about the malaria bit tbh. Didn't realise it wasn't during filming, but still- if you go in somewhere like that knowing how long it takes to get out if something happens you should at least be on anti-malarials. That was it. We could get a chopper or a plane in if needed so if it got serious you were 3 hours away from proper care.

Theres enough other 💩 to worry about that should have been an easy tick. Didn't manage to get a pic of the forest cobra in my room or the spitting cobra under the kitchen sink 🤣
