Is or was the HW77 really that good?

Don't tell anyone but I've just had my full length 77 barrel shortened to 300mm. It's still .22 but hey, it's an imperfect world. ssshh!!

Length isn't everything you know, as long as it can fill the bullseye, that's all that matters

Oddly enough I did consider that, for my Venom one and a more recent (proper calibre) one I had
Came to the conclusion the V 77 was better left as is and I don't really like underlevers enough to do it to the more modern one

MK2 77 with cocking release switch and 25mm cylinder is the one for me 1986 vintage and will hold its own if not better any modern equivalent

I had it done mainly to bring the balance further back when adding the new silencer unit. It's only a bit shorter than it started out as you can see but feels better to shoot. This is on the Venom MK1 I got a few months ago. It's still a work in progress. The new stock is coming along.

I just cannot get along with the MK2 catch.

Had one about 3 or 4 years ago in .22 but sold it to an acquaintance of mine who lives close to me.

I have always been drawn to silver guns and should have gotten a nickel one, particularly the 97.

I am in New Mexico, USA, hence the thorny vegetation

I have a Webley Vulcan and an HW97 so very nearly a direct comparison.

Believe me, your brother had the best gun. Whilst the Vulcan was good, the 77 was and still is a superb springer.

I can see another 77 in my future. I’ve had one and stupidly sold it, for no good reason.

The dream would be a MK3 77K with 25mm piston in .20 and an adjustable stock by Nobby. I like the look of the green laminate, but don’t want the weight ideally.

I’ve said it before, but I think a 77K is all the Sub 12 rifle most people would ever need.

The cocking action etc is fine.
Just that flaming horrible sliding catch which goes the wrong way.
All my other 77 and 97s are lovely to shoot.
This one shoots OK too - but that catch is pain in the bum.

Not the mainspring, I mean the spring in the catch itself. Change for lighter and the switch is much nicer to use

It is simply a design which does not suit me at all.
