HW98 Vortek upgrade - lube?

Hi Jim, I am facing the same dilemma and would like to ask your opinion on the Vortek kit for the HW98. Did it improve your rifle and get rid of the twang and buzz?. Did the supplied spring fit or did you have to cut a coil off in order to achieve power?. Also I am wondering if I actually need a full power rifle as I think a lower power springer is easier to shoot and maybe eliminate the buzz in the process? what is your opinion mate? My rifle is in .177 flavour and currently has a TBT kit installed but it does not sound nice so I am thinking of lowering the power to around 8/9 foot pounds from 10.5......... Any recommendations guys what shall I do??. I have other toys to play with so there is no urgency I would just like some opinions on what to do to make it quieter please. One love Ali

Not Jim here, obviously, but, how many pellets ( weights/types) have you tried in your rifle? How is spring guide fit to your spring ?
A slightly lighter or heavier or harder or softer pellet can make a big difference , re: buzz/ twang.
A spring, swapped end for end can make a difference in guide fit.

The spring almost certainly will need cutting
I've fitted rather a few and all were the same

Cut in small sections, take the burr off the cut coil and try. Keep cutting till you get where you want.
There is a chance going as low as 8-9ftlb that you can end up wit very little preload, which may show up on the shot cycle
Test with a variety of makes and weights, while going through testing of each cut

Hi Ali,

My kit was pre steel, all delrin & the spring was ‘pre lubed’ with the red lube provided, but was a quality lubricant. 10.5 sounds ideal for targets - try a half a coil at a time, at least you don’t need to flatten the spring end with the pg4. Likely you’ll only need to lose a coil to balance the power.
Just a thought, the buzz could well be from the OEM piston liner. Once the piston liner is removed to install the vortek kit the buzz should be no more

Thank you for the reply Jim as suggested I will try a plastic liner first to try and reduce buzz... I don't want to spend hours tinkering so thought the vortek kit would be the quickest solution. One love Ali
