Fly fishing

When I started fly fishing only think I caught was a tree or a bush lol. Best thing I bought was a brace for my wrist which help my technique to cast. Learning then what fly to use and what depths to fish etc

A thing to remember when casting is that distance is not the be all and end all. Field craft so to speak is much more important, study the water and the environment

Absolutely, you can catch fish down the edge in very shallow water, watercraft 😉

Hello, Looking on a day at Farmoor in early May if anyone interested, Have one fellow fisherman coming from South Wales to have a go, A bit of casting advice and practice then hope he can catch a trout or 2, He is using my gear 9ft 6 line/ 9.6inch 7 line , Just hope the weathers good, Not to hot and a nice breeze

I used to live that way and generally fished it from the bank. If it's not blowing a hooley, casting into the wind can be very productive- you don't have to cast far. Alternatively a team of nymphs fished Cove style can do the business.

Hello, Just to up date, We went to Farmoor yesterday, Turned out quite cold and very windy, Although not for the want of trying he never touched a Trout but learned on basic casting and such like, Found my 9ft.6 inch 7 line best, As he came a fair distance , South Wales, I gave him a nice river rod/ Reel and DT 5 line as he intends to try on the Wye and Usk, Another budding Trout Fisherman

Hi Ratman. Well done mate...good on you. If no newcomers enter our sports they will die out and a lot of people just don't know where to start. Hat doffed to you sir. There is some fabulous fishing available through the Wye and Usk foundation. If their token system is still in operation it's well worth a look.
Cheers
Chris.

Hello, Thankyou, That is what i was hoping to spark the interest as he has a young son, They are going to try out in the garden and watch a few casting videos, The fly line was designed to look like silk but cannot remember who made them, The Kit will go well on the Usk or Wye , not only that but a nice way for Mum Dad Son Daughter to enjoy time fishing together,

Hi Ratman. Sounds a lovely outfit, best of luck to him. I have recently introduced a chap to our local club waters, he is young with a young family also and was over the moon at the thought of being able to take his Son fishing as juniors are free membership in our small club. 40 quid a year gives them access to about 6 miles of fishing on two rivers, some within walking distance of where he lives, one river is trout only and the other has mixed trout and coarse fish. Hopefully give the next generation a lifelong interest in not only fishing but the outdoors, nature, wildlife, conservation, the seasons, and all that goes with it. I think it is well worth the few hours of our time if only one youngster takes an interest.
Cheers
Chris.

Anyone know how Talybont reservoir is fishing these days as will be out that way in a couple of weeks time

Me and 3 mates had a couple of days on farmoor a few years back, from memory it was later in the year maybe July , it was scorching.
The methods in the day were out in the boat, I pulled snakes, my mate fished buzzers, and snakes slightly outfished the buzzers - it was pretty non stop, and the best spot was up near the drain in the corner of F2.
In the evening, we fished from the bank, and only 12/15 yds out, buzzers 8ft under a bung- it was absolutely non stop.
The farmoor fish seem to pull like no others, my mate had a take that burnt his fingers, I could smell it from the other end of the boat.
Out in the boat, I was recovering a decent brown of about 5lb, and when doing so leant just a bit too far forward, and for a bit long into a wet line tray. As it inflated, I didn’t realise what was happing at first, I just felt the world closing in around me as my mate pissed himself.
