Could an open sight springer win an HFT Comp?

Just had a google search for the guy, who's name is redacted, came first in the score card above.

An old bog shows he's an FT shooter with FT rig and places respectably in the Nationals and Inter-Regional Air Rifle comps in the UK.

Make of that what you will :)

You’re in the .22 club so definitely mental, same as me! And I think it’s a 1 in a 100 shot 😁
My " Daily Drivers" 1 ea. .177 & .22...only half mental😊

I had my first go at HFT in 2018 at MAD at the British air rifle championships. I set my gun up the night before and had never fired a shot prone, ever. I think I missed 4 long ones at or over 40 yards as I had only checked my drop at long distances with 3 shots and I made a mistake with my corrections. I missed no close ones or positional shots and I'd probably have cleared it if I had taken more care setting up. As an experienced FT shooter I found it good fun. (I won the event which was based on combined HFT and FT rounds.) I'd like to have another go now I'm getting over long term illness which has buggered me since. I wouldn't mind going around standing, but I shudder at the thought of taking those targets on without a scope.

Erm I’m a ex FT shooter and can’t shoot hft to save my life lol.
My mk1 eyeball is abysmal.
I’ve placed well enough in the nationals to qualify for the world’s every year.

So much great debate, loving it (y)

Just a comment about longer shots, I tend to instinctively feel the shot more than concentrating on the finer points of aim.

Why? because too long spent on thinking about the shot gives an opportunity for those little devils to creep in and spoil the shot, but that's just me.

Its unfortunate I just don't get as much standing practice nowadays.

Some may have read I gave some love to a 1936 BSA Standard 'Long Tom' and ran it over the chrono today as it had been standing for a while.

But my question is - Could an open sight springer win at least a small club HFT comp.

In posting the Chrono thread it reminded me I did a club HFT comp with my open sight 1936 BSA Standard 'Long Tom' and I had a screen shot somewhere on my laptop of the club HFT comp results - below.

I had to do the HFT course standing unsupported and ended 12 points behind the winner who used a scoped pcp and all three HFT positions, top section.

Now I'm pretty sure a better shot than me using an open sight springer and all three positions could win at least a small club HFT Comp over scoped pcp users.

What do you think?

Not on its own who would drive it to the range?

@Simona glad to hear your getting better (y)

Go for it (y)

I have years of standing practice so it was instinctive for me and yes different positions change poa.

For my hunting rigs I have a prone rifle, now the Doc has increased pain killers, an off sticks rifle and an in car rifle all set up for shooting from each position.

Just imagine trying to allow 4 or 5 inches of wind deflection on a long one with open sights - you could easily be masking the KZ with the tunnel of your foresight and be aiming at thin air.

I think that could put in a very respectable effort with some practice - take the time to work out your shot impacts from 4 to 42 yards, practice from different positions and, practice ranging by eye (I envisage my steps to the target) and, don't get put off by comments or the nice kit on display during the day - you could do very well 🤞🏻

I think that rifle is capable, as long as the man on the other end is in the right frame of mind 😉

Give it a go - I'd love to see you see you hit mid to high 50s on your first round with it 👍🏻

@Rudolph Hucker not for me I'm afraid, my old hands take a real beating with cocking springers nowadays so getting in the practise to get back to standard I was then is unlikely.

@chouchin66 not a member of a club now,not even sure if that one is still going.

Hopefully someone will take on the challenge this spring summer and keep us all up dated.

But I think specialist sights will be needed on a modern springer.

A fine point foresight post, bead or globe and as you know a peep sight.
