5 minute job

There is no such thing as a 5 minute job!
It takes 4 hours to find the stuff she has moved that i need for the job! meanwhile she is adamant she has not moved it.
Then when i find it and she has indeed moved it she just says you should move all your crap then!
Best way is to just say i will do it when i get time and then never get the time

Just say you’ll do it when you get one of these

I always use the excuse "When I get a round Tooit". If questioned, I clarify saying I have seen square ones in the shops but they are all out of round ones ! Not sure she has actually worked it out yet 😁

Here's one .
young man asked me to shorten a cylinder . So chop it and recut and thread the end . He supplied the corresponding part to check the fit and thread .

Easy .

Well yeah .
Except the tube is 35mm and my old girl only has 32mm bore .
I can part it to length in a chuck with a centre in the tailstock thats fine . but boring and threading is going to need support due to the length of material sticking out .

had to have a think . obviously fixed steady needs to be incorporated . But...... the tube is brand new and anodised to a finish so need to avoid contact marks and rubbing from the steady .

PTFE pads on the steady fingers works so long as you run slow 😁 (don’t ask how I know and mine has a 70mm bore, same issue though)

Could you make PTFE rollers for the fixed steady ?
Had a piece of tube last week in my little Warco lathe, had to use my fixed steady but it doesn't come with wheels only fingers
luckily item was to be sprayed after, so I just gave it a good greasing with CV grease, still left a rub mark so another little job to do one day
 
My take on 2min jobs or 5 min jobs is that when done, they usually last the same period of time.

Might as well do it right first time.. saves aggro and wasted money.

nice idea
i really wanted to avoid contact with the work piece .
here's what i came up with ,

Masking tape
A split sleeve for mounting in the 4 jaw chuck
and a split clamp / bearing surface . the half near the chuck is a split clamp , the later section is a continuous bearing surface for the steady fingers to run on .|

Ever known one to actually only take the advertised length of time ?
Definitely not! My wife often comes up with ten minute jobs that can be measured in hours if not tens of hours🤣

Also the amount of times you start what should be a ten minute job only for it to take longer. For instance yesterday I went to open a qr pin on a gun I recently bought. 5 min job??? Only to find both screws rounded and there we go down the rabbit hole. After trying various Allen keys and, alawn bits and torque bits, then a thread extractor etc I eventually drilled the head fully off and knocked it through. 😂😂

For me: To put a time on something I'm going to do... is to jinx it!
I get on with it and, it's finished when I'm happy with it...that's it.
Maybe I'm a pessimist...or have experience of too many f8k-ups in the past...trying to do things quicker
 
workpiece mounted and clocked in the 4 jaw with the sleeve to protect from jaw marks .
supported by centre in the tailstock and clocked again at the far end

The bearing surface next turned concentric

then the steady mounted to the fresh bearing surface . lots of flood lube on the bearing
