Best springer for garden target work - 25-30m

They are both quite heavy at around 5kg scoped. The TX, full length not HC, is easier to cock. Because they both have virtually the same action they are both easy to work on/ tinker with. I would get yourself to an RFD or a range and see if you and your kids can handle any of the ones on a short list and see which fits best.
 
I’ve heard that the .177 trajectory of a HW30 at 7-8 ft/lb ish is very similar to a .22 at 10ish, can anyone comment? Assuming light .22 pellets.

I’d imagine a HW99 at 10ish in .22 ought to be almost as nice to shoot as a HW30 .177 so I struggle to see the point of a .22 HW30 unless you need one size-wise?
 
In the next few days, I am going to begin to "thin the herd" in my back yard. The Squirrel population is getting too large and becoming destructive. When I was an active hunter, I never shot anything that I didn't eat so I did not hunt Squirrels. In this case I am going to fore go that restriction. I am a big believer in OSKILL, (one shot kills) so this is my plan. Inside 25 yds I will use my HW30 in .177, 25-50yds I will use either my HW100 in .22 or my AA S510 in .25 cal. If the HW30 does not perform as I expect I will change out to my HW110 in .177.
 
I have a HW77K and a HW97K, I don't personally shoot in the garden, but these two I would fear being to loud and possibly get complaints from the neighbours. The HW30 doesn't sound as loud as my two when shooting next to people at the range with this gun.

Noise ( muzzle blast) is the rapid release & expansion of gas , ( air) ergo, less volume of air from the HW30s smaller cylinder, to expand, less noise.
 
.22 HW30 is unquestionably more efficient than a .177 they are no diferent to any other gun bigger less air or in a spring less spring force its that science thing again.
HW30 in .22 get around 9fpe not much more, and a .177 HW30 with the same spring force will be 8 ish fpe.
Weight is where the HW30 wins big time over pretty much anything, and as its such low power the spring force involved at they powers is not significant and the shot cycle and indeed cocking effort are sublime.
The HW99 is heavier its balance and handling not as slick as a HW30, its in the 11sfpe from the factory and given its 7lb umscoped weight although not a massively heavy gun its heavier than the HW30 and to be as slick it will need to be late 9s early 10s in .177 and emid 10s in .22. which will involve detuning the kit adding cost the work or cost of detuning, something you need do none of with the HW30.
If you are going HW99 weight IMO go that bit more get the HW35 and if you are going HW35 you may as well go HW97, the OP is 25/30 yards ... for me the HW30 has it . YOMV.
 
If youngsters feature in your plans they ought to be fairly central, in the sense that there's nothing more discouraging than having to use a big heavy rifle and not being able to hit anything with it because its a struggle to hold it up - and then possibly having to get help to reload it...
HW30! Plenty of advice on here to sort out the galling (and tune the innards if felt necessary)

From my experience you are right about the trajectory of a .177 HW30 against a .22 HW99, given the power outputs you suggest. In still / very light breeze conditions the .177 HW30S is truly superb out to 50m and for target or plinking are ideal.
I came very late to the lightweight break barrels, but Im so glad I gave them a try. Up to then HW98'S and reduced cylinder HW80's were my go too's.....not so now 😉

I'm always surprised at how flat a .177 hw30 shoots, even my .20 seems to be phenomenal in the trajectory department.
For such a small displacement they are very efficient it seems.
Great out the crate, and superb with a mild upgrade.
They truly are, 'one of those air rifles'👌

I have all three of these HWs here.

My HW30 seems quiet to me when shooting, less muzzle crack. - mechanically not quite as quiet as its (modified) bigger brothers.

Please bear in mind that a lot of the noise (of backard plinking) perceived by others actually comes from the pellet hitting the targets.
Some steel back stops are really loud!

A cardboard box stuffed with old rags is almost silent, costs nothing and takes minutes - simply Sellotape your paper targets to the front.
Just be sure to keep it dry - they take ages to dry out and stink after getting wet!

The thing is your thread here 25/30 yds garden etc. its screaming HW30. many of the comments regarding appertaining to bigger springers the weight/ accuracy/ shot cycle etc all have varying degrees of credence it has to be said.
But the HW30 has lightweight lowish power but at these moderate ranges are both nice to shoot and extremely accurate and for prolonged target and plinking sessions the fun is measured in tons and all from a fun little gun which weighs but a few lbs.
Up to 30 ish yards anything if its zeroed at ...well around 30 yards will be flatish in trajectory even if its in the 8fpe area and a low mounted scope and even if its heavy for caliber projectiles 10gr.177 & 16gr .22its your mid range holdover i suprisingly little thats even if you are going to shoot at closer ranges. To push the ranges out further stick with the heavier pellets just mount the scope higher and you can ring out a few extra yards 45 yards is completely feasible and if you practice enough at the longer than 30yard ranges get familiar with the trajectory which realy is over rated as a must have it just is.
The .22 is so often cast off as off hand in favour of the .177s perceived trajectory advantage which if you actually put it to the test is minimal certainly not the must have some claim. Sorry i deviate here.
The HW30 is just so right for playing i believe they are worth considering for everyone .
