Best springer for garden target work - 25-30m

One thing that no one has commented on is that the HW30 has a much better trigger mechanism than just about anything else at a comparable price. I don't have an HW30 - but I do have a gun with a Record trigger, and once you have experienced the delights of a great trigger you won't want to go back to an indifferent one. When it comes to youngsters, a good trigger is a boon. It's so much easier to use than something stiff and heavy with loads of creep.
I can tolerate a rough trigger, and I suppose most members can do likewise, but if you want to give someone a good start in shooting

I have 1 or 2 Weihrauchs, I bought my lad one a few years ago and we scrabble to get to it first, it’s just a great little rifle, can’t go wrong for kids or adults

I love my Prosport too, however I find the convenience of the HW30S being such a lightweight break barrel, and so clinically accurate, my go to in the garden.
I would go as far to say that the 30s is as accurate - in low wind conditions - as my Prosport all the way out to 50m.
Don't worry....Ill never get rid of my Prosport

I’ve heard that the .177 trajectory of a HW30 at 7-8 ft/lb ish is very similar to a .22 at 10ish, can anyone comment? Assuming light .22 pellets.

I’d imagine a HW99 at 10ish in .22 ought to be almost as nice to shoot as a HW30 .177 so I struggle to see the point of a .22 HW30 unless you need one size-wise?

My .177 HW30 shoots faster/ flatter than a full power .22 using any lead pellets. It's shooting FAPs at a tad under 700 fps. A .22 shooting 11.9 gr RWS hobby at 700fps would be doing nearly 13 fpe.

For a quiet 'out of the box' springer I'd be looking at the Cometas that come with a mod (the carbine versions ) - the 220 or 400 . They are quiet out of the box. The triggers are OK too

I honestly don't think it will get fired outside of the garden now, i might try a local range in the future, as the kids have got older they have spent less time with me, so nipping out for an hour in the garden is about the best commitment i will get

The trigger movement seems to be split between first and second stages but unlike a Rekord you can't (easily) alter the total length of travel. Long way of saying a short crisp second stage means a looong first stage. I got used to it....
If that's OK with you the let off can be pretty good.
This relates to the 400 trigger. I can't personally comment on what can be done with the 220 trigger having not fiddled with one. The couple I've shot had ok triggers - certainly better than a standard Xs19 etc.

I ended up accumulating a few no deposit 15kgs gas cylinders, we were looking about for something to turn into a backstop and yet make a safe backstop be potrable stable and not make too much noise. i just chopped a square out the front with the grinder ( Obviously screw out the gas valve fitting at the top and leve it vent for a wile fill it with water etc).
I drilled four holes one in each corner , 4 3 inch roofing bolts flattened the plate a ground out tacked two half inch strips top and bottom of the plate fastened the plate on the front with the roofing bolts and some lock nuts . ground a 5 inch hole in the middle of the plate picked a biggish log off the log pile that would just make it in the hole in the cylinder a hole in the log with drill two tie wraps a roof bolt through the top tie wrap holding the swinging log via the vas thread hole at the top two bulldog clips and clip the paper to the front plate pellets go through the paper through the hole smack the swinging log it mostly just makes the sound of pellets smacking wood but every now and then i get a sort of muffled mild gong sort of sound but its barely audible and as long as you are something like on the money wont ever suffer a pellet mark. the wood is swinging its 8 inch thick when it finaly busts through if it ever does just side cutters clip the tie wraps and swap for a new log. its got nothing to get wet or rot in my lifetime its freeish and got rid of garbage i had accumulated my lad used this basic idea to create his own bell target unit and he has the same layout with the cylinder i have i want to make another so i can have them at different ranges , they hide at the back of the shed if folks are around and apart from the dogs urinating on them theu are about faultless LOL!

The HW30 in .22 gets my vote all day long. I’m using mine for rats on the patio eating leftover dog biscuit we put out for the Magpies and Jackdaws. I pop the rats from the bedroom window using H&N Terminators or Polymags which at twelve yards do a pretty good job!
I treated the same rifle to a few hours at the range recently and using the same ammo at 35 yards on a splatter target stuck to a stiff cardboard box it was like a laser with the pellet going clean through the box and hitting the mud bank behind it with a noticeable cloud of dirt and grit coming up.
I put the rifle over the LMBR chrono using .22 Terminators and got a reading of 8.2 ft/lb
I love this little rifle it gets me all excited it’s so capable for the small rifle that it is and I’m more than amazed at what 8ft/lb can do.

Yeah its a resounding recommendation from many! interesting you use it for ratting too - nice clean kills with it?

Absolutely, either head shots or the engine room if side on straight through the vitals just behind the top of the front leg ( heart and lungs). A clean kill, switch up - lights out. Backing on to a park with a pond where people feed ducks bread there is no end to the rat numbers and they soon get to know about the bits of food we put out because they observe the birds coming down to feed which lets the rats know there’s food there.

All good replies above, how about a nice SMK Victory CP2 for the kids, accurate to 25m, its a rifle, its a pistol, its single shot, its multi shot, approx 35-40 shots per co2 fill, its light, its very easy to cock (bolt) its very quite with the mod on, its tuneable if you want to go that way, etc. Then you'll have plenty change to get something else just for you.....

And to add the above excellent post folks, don't forget the .22 in anything gets it all done with less spring force or air than its exact twin in .177. its that science thing again. Just sayin.
