I was chatting to a Farmer today.
It is sheering time here at the moment.
He was telling me that he is getting between 1/2 to 1 1/2 pence for each fleece.
It is better for him to burn the wool, rather than transport it.
Crazy.
Non of the usual boring sheep Farmer jokes please.

That same sentiment was shown on Countryfile a few weeks ago.

There was someone from a wool yarn producer and strangely they weren't falling over themselves to go get the fleeces.

Hello, It is a huge loss for sheep farmers and not much better on the Lamb prices, Why cannot they export fleeces ? My friend from Estonia came over a few years back and bought some cheap sheep skin coats for winter wear as they cannot buy there

It’s not so much about making a profit on the fleeces really , it would be nice but it’s never going to happen .
The have to be sheered , you have no choice really it’s part of rearing sheep . The profit is made on the sale of the meat .

We have around 1500 ewes Last clip came to 25p per fleece, cost £2.50 per head to sheer them. And our wool is a premium apparently!!!!

The like was in agreement, not for the info

Think we paid £1.25/ewe but did all the penning and wool handling ourselves. Dog will jump in & out of the forcing pen on command so was catching for the shearers as well- doesn't make it any cheaper once labour is factored in. We're mostly Texel X ewes but the handful of shedders we have get more appealing each year.

Doesn't help when they drop the arse out of the lamb prices like they just have either.

British wool are the biggest back stabbing *******s in the industry mate!!!
Would have paid a mans wages once upon a time!!!
It’s such a shame as it’s a fantastic product!
Texels … we had some a few yrs back if memory serves. Heavy stocky/muscular buggers

All of ours are New Zealand Romneys .

Didn't the Government force farmers to sell fleeces to a consortium and make it illegal to sell them privately?

it was a bit more complicated than that as all things with farmers/government
But yes we all got bent over the table on that !
It’s just a shame really , we must have hundreds and hundreds of bales all stacked up waiting to go and there’s not even enough to cover fuel to transport it 😞

How come Americans love our wool clothing, spend a fortune on it,Axminster carpet 2 arms and 2 legs and all woven products loads, but farmers get Jack so wrong 🙃🙃🙃

a local farmer told me the price of wool was not very good but nothing to bleat about

Other than being paid quicker, I'm not sure the other wool buyers are much better though.

Yeh, Texels are definitely on the butch side- wouldn't want more than first x out of them. Stubborn bit***es as well. Makes sense why shearing was so much more for you, taking off that woolly balaclava around their heads!

It's the same down under. Farmers used to get more for the fleece than the lamb but now it is worth nothing.

Everyone's wearing synthetics now, how many of you still wear wool?

The Farmer I mentioned walked into a shop selling woollen cardigans, thinking he would get one cheap.
£125.

I can’t argue with your anger at the situation but Are They the real enemy? I’ve heard of cartels of Irish buyers playing the market prices. The real criminal behaviour in my opinion is the marketers who have pushed the buyer’s perspective towards materials made by oil byproducts.

Being a believer in the now disbanded milk marketing board, I really want to believe the wool board are going to be able to turn this around….. ever the optimist and all 🤦🏼‍♂️
