When to buy a gun safe

Only relaying what has happened in the real world to 2 applicants down here, as I said It’s happened with a couple of new certificate applicants at our clay club.

You are referring to this?
"Only that they may ask questions about them and get distracted. Also they would note down the capacity of your cabinet, which if it’s half full already they’d then likely say would be less. It’s happened with a couple of new certificate applicants at our clay club."
"It’s happened with a couple of new certificate applicants at our clay club."

What has happened exactly?
FEOs getting "distracted" - surely they can all count up to 10?

Buy a cabinet that will comfortably (and a bit more), house the number of rifles you wish to keep and get it fitted prior to the home visit
Show that you're serious.

Why would you waste the time of the FEO and yourself?

SB1,
All police forces are not the same, some are very efficient and process the applications quite quickly, complete your application with all your referees, Doctors form duly completed, photo graph/s and cheque if (postal application) or complete it all on-line and make the payment.
You will be contacted by a FEO and they will 100% tell you if it is going to happen or not, based on all the information you have sent them.
If it is to be positive, they will inform you that you need an approved cabinet in-situ before their visit, this is the time to purchase a cabinet and install it, if you are not competent enough to drill four holes and install the bolts get a friend or a friend of a friend to assist you, it is so easy to do.
If you were near to me I would do it for you FOC.
I am pretty sure that there will be someone in your club, this forum, work or pub that would help you out.
Hope you are successful with your application.

Is second hand a good idea? I don't like the idea because of key cutting and things thieves
I'd pick up a decent second had to get you going, you can always sell them on and upgrade when you are all sorted, that's what I did.as stated you will never have enough room so it's best to buy large, but to get you going just buy a second hand one,,I've sold a few cabinets on when I upgraded in the past,
Take note of the height in particular, make sure you get a tall one,,,

There's a lot of unusual advice on this particular thread, so here's my particular take

Go get one fitted right now, it will come in useful and they're not expensive. Think about where you're going to put it. You want to make sure that it is not visible from the front door, but it is easy to get to so that when you come back from a day's shooting the first thing you do is put the guns back in the cabinet..

Go for as bigger cabinet as you can physically fit and I would go for deep and tall. Even if you're not going to put anything other than shotguns in there. You can never have too big a cabinet

I have a couple of cabinets. One from bratton sound which is great and I also have a BSA branded one which actually is the better of the two. Personally speaking, I would go for locks and keys rather than keypads. The keypad ones always have a key as a backup so you may as well just go for two keys

Think about what kind of walls you have, where you want to fit it and if you've got anything like. And dab then have a look at rigfix as they're probably the best option for attaching to that.

Good luck with the application

Exactly. Bought new both the company selling them - who likely know the addresses of hundred if not thousands of customers - and some random delivery driver now know.

Have it sent to work, like one chap I know did but he still had to supply his home address too for payment\invoice purposes, they also know where you work as well. Oh how I laughed!

Private purchase collecting in person and calling yourself Dave is safest. Unless your names actually Dave, then it's John.
I suppose a hacker or somebody is more of a threat targeting a gun safe company than the odd second hand theif but all seem dodgy.

There's risk everywhere when you put your info out there. Just ask some guntrader customers :ROFLMAO:

The problem with gun safes as I found out is that they are predominantly made for sightless rifles or shotguns.
To get 2x or 3x sighted air rifles in a safe, you would need a 5 or 6 gun cabinet, which will be huge & very heavy.
Me & the Mrs have 3x sighted air rifles between us & I wanted to keep them locked away, as we don't have any lockable cupboards in the house, I managed recently to find a chap not too far away selling a steel 40 year old handmade lockable cabinet at a very low price.
It wouldn't be police approved for a licenced firearm, but it is really strong & well made & perfect to lock away air rifles.

The police liason officer at a Home Office Approved club will be most likely to give you accurate information on time scale for a visit from Police and in my area they do tend to like to get a cabinet inspection and interview done in one visit.
With regard to Police fitting a cabinet the answer is no although there are guidelines on their website and you can speak to crime prevention regarding security .
As said before the keys are your keys and unless yourself and wife have a joint fac where all guns are shared on both of your certs nobody should have access but you.

Plus they're normally a bargain, i got a Brattonsound 7 gun deep cabinet with lockable internal top box for £50.
Only thing was the guy selling left it in his loft and was out when I came to collect, his Mrs and I had to get it down.
I bet getting that out of the loft was fun!!! It weighs about 118 pounds.

Then in that case you are very unlikely to get an FAC approved,
it is a required item for the home inspection..
Wrong!
Please don't spread mis-information.

once again Different Constabulary different "interpretation" of "The Rules "
However, the Chief Constable needs to be satisfied that they can be stored safety before granting a certificate. Therefore the following conditions must be met:

  1. All shotguns and firearms must be kept in bona fide gun cabinets
  2. Cabinets must be located in the main building of the house and not in a garage or outbuilding
  3. The cabinets must be rawl-bolted to a solid brick wall and out of sight of casual callers
  4. Section 1 ammunition must be stored securely and separately from section 1 weapons
You might be told that all is OK with your application, but it won't be granted before the FEO has inspected the safe in position

So you can be told your license is approved but won't be granted until you have proven your guns will be secure.
You do not need a cabinet fitted for the interview.
Details matter.

The FEO cannot approve/grant your cert only the CC can do that the FEO can only recommend you to Him/Her you will need a second visit from your FEO before your interview is complete and he can put forward your application for approval.
I did say in my previous post quote "You might be told that all is OK with your application.", I said OK not approved. Details do matter :)

Again. YOU DO NOT NEED A CABINET FITTED FOR THE INTERVIEW!
Which is what this whole thread was about.
Prove me wrong...
