What's the Best Pellet?

Speaking of .177 calibre pellets only the answer is easily solved, just spend £14.99/ 500 on your chosen pellets and you will be okay to go. The trick is to find and buy pellets which cost 1/2 the price and acquire good chrono/accuracy results.

pellets.

using a HW35 [springer] some 25-30 years ago for hunting i tried wadcutters and found the killing power of these pellets to be awesome, and never used anything else after, never had any runners, and accuracy was never a problem only ever shooting out to 30 yards. If i ever get back into hunting i'll be trying wadcutters in my Wolf. ATB Alan.

About 45 years ago i had a 177 BSA Airsporter. I used to use Eley "Match" wadcutters in that. Very accurate and certainly worked on squirrels..

john..

I have spoken to guys in the past that keep their pellets wet with a little gun oil, is this necessary or just a waste of time and oil

Can it help with velocity and accuracy? I am guessing the theory is a tighter fit in the bore

Like most of us I have tried all manner of pellets in different calibres, ( as the many boxes in my Den bear witness to ) and some pellets that are revered here don't work @ all well in my rifles

- which are the usual mix of PCP springer and gas...

...what I do find is that a diábolo pellet with soft skirt and lowish weight seem to work best in terms of accuracy, and odd non traditional materials seem to make groupings inconsistent too...

I am also of the opinion that an accurate pellet @ the right distance even if "lightweight" does the trick... "heavy hitters" tend to drop or miss... now that may be me of course as the greatest variation is the trigger finger.. (adding distance too) the variation of Windage between calibres in my experience doesn't seem that great but I'm not going out shooting when it's really blowy..

Other observations are I can never quite work out which brands are badge engineered and which are not :-) but the pellet brands from the Czech republic seem to currently be best for the rifle brands I use( AA FWB Falcon and HW )

Me i not to fused about what pellets i use , i normally go for the cheapest ones , they may not be much good for groupings , but for me its a bit of fun and relaxation trying to shot a zombie or other creatiure/s in the pellet catcher or shoting empty pop cans, i some times buy pellets of ebay part used tins if there cheap enough and they can be good quality pellets some times..

On more than one occasion I've seen and personally received comments of 'use some JSBs and those groups will tighten right up..'

I know these are considered a bench standard (pun intended) and many people's 'goto' pellet, but both my HW95 and BSA CLX dislike JSBs!
..and I've tried many different weights/sizes/flavours..

My 95 likes AA DFs and QYS domed but the CLX hates both these and loves BSA Goldstars and the heavier H&N Baracuda FTs.

A nice touch at my local range is they have an open tin of each of the pellets they sell and let you try a magazines worth before you buy. This gesture has saved me more than a few quid👍

It’s a trick question the answer is - it doesn’t exist. Some work well in lots of rifles but won’t be the best. Finding the best for any rifle takes lots of time and I’d say 99% haven’t got to the best pellet but happy with the pellets they’ve settled on.

I have only been shooting Air rifles for around 2 years, I was using JSB 8.44 exacts for most of the time, however, I found that my latest buy a Krait, was brilliant with Norma gold trophy FT heavy 9.1, and then on trying them in my Redwolf, Katran and BRK Sniper XR, I use them in all 4, 1 shoot from 20 yards to 50 yards (targets) the only exception is when I attempt bench rest at 25 yards, I use JSB exact premium. I am just about to try out some H&N barracuda FT,s.

I’ve been using FTT today in my HW97. I found they were pretty good from 30 to 50 metres. I even got a comment from the guy beside me, “that‘s good shooting for a springer,” so it was happy days for me. I’ve never yet done a proper pellet comparison. I just use what I’ve got for plinking.

For my bsa ultra se .177 I have tried a good few but the best i have found and will only use is air arms Diablo 8.4g 4.52 my mate had a bsa r10 mk2 he had always used jsb he tried around 50 of my AAs and now uses them
For my theoben fenman rammer I was told about jsb RS .22 tried AA Diablo, rws and H&N but the jsb RS are showing to be a very good choice
