What recomendations for the perfect ratting air rifle...

Something cheap you don't care about is a good rat gun .
I had a chopped down MK1 .22 HW80
all Matt blacked with a Moonlighter x45 on it bought s/h v cheap.
MK1 Vulcan, 4x32 .22 .
Sharp Innova x32, .22 4 pumps..all.shooting Hobby.
This was when I had X2 of the best rat shoots I have ever had or seen..no NV, no Pcps, no mags yet shot 1000's of them over the years.
I still don't waste good money just for rats ..today, it's a Hatsan AT44 .22 with a Photon on it.
Use something you don't mind damaging.

A few years back when I first started with airguns and fell in love with Ultras I screwed up fitting a reg to an Ultra, I knew nothing, couldn't get it to work so sent it to Ratworks for a full tune. Came back working but still only had 45 shots per fill. Spoke to Ratwrks and they said that's as good as it get's with a Huma reg. As my knowledge grew I managed to get around 60. Simplest and cheapest way to improve the shot count on an Ultra (regged or unregged) is a blast tamer.

I was a complete Ultra fan boy for a couple of years, owned many in that time, but @Scoie made me into a Crown bitch by letting me shoot the 300mm barrelled Crown he bought off @Winkmyster. I no longer own any Ultras still think they're a great gun but the Crown is so much more refined and with the plenum gauge and externally adjustable regulator is simple to fettle.

A well setup sub 12 Crown with a superlight barrel cut to 300mm and a 300cc bottle will give around 250 shots from a fill and be the same weight as an Ultra. Keep the 480cc bottle and it won't weigh much more but will give around 400 shots. A 380mm barrel don't weigh much more and will up the shot count whilst saving money by not having the barrel cut down. Just changing to a 300cc bottle has a significant effect on the feel of the gun.

The Ultra Ultra

Here's a superlight 300mm barrel (barrel work by @Hmangphilly) and 480 bottle. I think this is the gun that is now the Ultra Ultra linked to above.

Below are 2 Crowns both with 300cc bottle, top one is 300mm superlight barrel (top one), bottom one is a 285mm LW barrel.

Will try to post a new thread after tomorrow's shooting day.

Buy cheap and miss! 🙄
Impact M3 Compact sub 12……Forgot to say don’t mess and/or tinker with them. Expensive, don’t waste your time with sub1k rifles…….🧨

Hi folks,
I thought I might as well ask the AGF Collective;
I'm considering a new air rifle for ratting. I currently use an old Bsa Ultra MMC .177, and an FX Crown .22fac.
The BSA Ultra is super accurate, in .177 flavor, but the shot count is just too low for the places I'm shooting, sometimes up to 300 rats a night, and compared to the Crown with the side lever it feels agricultural, the FX Crown MK2 is fantastic but it's a long gun, and after using it for four hours of constant shooting around a pig unit it feels like I've had a workout at the gym... so the spec I'm looking for is as follows;
#1 .177 flavor
#2 Shot count into the hundreds before a refill
#3 Lightweight
#4 Sidelever cocking
#5 Short in overall length, the BSA Ultra is perfect length-wise.
#6 Accurate & reliable PCP
#7 Got to be ok for a Lefty to shoot without a great big magazine sticking into my cheek.

Any thoughts & guidance would be greatly appreciated and give me something to think about. I did look some time ago at a Dreamline lite bottle version, but I think they are too long
Atb
WB.
Edit, my Crown is the VP version so it has a synthetic stock already.
Sounds like you would like to get rid of MMC (Only joking got one in 22 always wanted a 177 brother) pity it’s low shot count bet it’s great for ratting otherwise 👍🏼👍🏼

Have bigger bottle on the ultra and get a weekender bottle to
Nice thread necro, it’s coming up two years old 👍

Interesting opinion, perhaps you could help me out? You see all of the following cost me under £1K each, which exactly is a waste of time and will cause me to miss?

Leshiy Classic
Kalibrgun Cricket MK1
Impact MK2
Maverick
HW100 in custom Craftsman Vit BP stock
Benjamin Akela
Uragan MK1
TX200 MK2

Joking aside, if I was doing regular pest control, I would likely be buying a Turkish bull pup, safe in the knowledge it’s cheap, light, compact, easy to work on, easy to improve and I stand an OK chance of getting parts if required, but best of all, I don’t have to worry about something I like taking a knock in the dark.

Come to think of it, the first thing I did to my Impact was pull it apart. If it could be dismantled and cleaned/properly lubricated and re-sealed, it was. Never leaked since, though I did regret not using a dot of thread lock on the trigger bolt, that did catch me out 10’s of thousands of shots and several years later, so I suppose you may have a point about not messing with them 🤣

Hello, Why would you miss if you bought a decent PCP ??

Thanks for all the advice on suitable options folks, especially Sagalout.
I think I'm getting somewhere. Probably going to lighten my FX Crown a bit, shorter barrel, carbon bottle, and smaller/lighter scope than a Hawke Frontier... see how that goes... I'll look at a Crown Compact first before I do anything.
Maybe a trip to a few well stocked shops is the next call to further my knowledge of what's available.
In the meantime, I'll keep bashing the rats with what I've got...
Thankyou spinningThankyou spinningThankyou spinning

Put a blast tamer on your Ultra if you keep using it, that should get you around 50 shots and costs 1-2£ + some DIY.

Sounds like my reximex myth if you don't want ro spend loads !

I have a Leshy 2 in .25 now, but a Kral NP02 in .177 was what I used to use. They are a very underated little rifle that is cheap enough, but needs a decent mod on it.

I've tried sll sorts over the years for night time rat jobs, even now I still find myself changing between. 22 and .177
I used a pair of ultra se,s in .177 for a long time, low shot count and small mags but laser accurate, tried brocock, daystate, theoben..... most ok, kral was a big hit for a long time with custom mags, big shot count, ridiculously accurate and very light and compact, but I never felt they quite fit the bill, currently I'm on two impacts, one in .177 with nv and the other in .22 with thermal, both have massive shot count and high capacity mags, accurate enough and not too heavy to carry on a four hour session. Only real downside being very cold to carry and stick your face against every few minutes when I'm working on yards in sub zero conditions.

Hello, Is there such an Air Rifle ??, It is all down to personal preference and budget, Things have moved on since i started with an old Falcon, Still have a P15 and when i can move my FX MK 1 Vermy on as i do not need a 200 + shot PCP i will look at some thing £250/ £350 , Light and 22 with around 80/100 shots per fill,
