What music are you listening to atm...

I have a pet theory that the 3 great composers can be likened to the 3 great wines of Bordeaux,

Mozart is intricate and flowery = Margaux opulence and refinement.

Bach is sublimely balanced and perfect beyond perfect = St Julien.

Beethoven is all power and unbridled force = Pauillac bold attack of tannins and intense dark fruit.

Nonsense, obviously, but in a synethiastic sort of way it makes sense to me.

Sorry to be so pretentious, but whenever I hear Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5 I can almost taste a bottle of wine I drank over 20 years ago.

I recommend the film “ My Immortal Beloved” reputed to be an intriguing true account of Beethoven’s life with some of his best music.

Thank you for the heads-up.

After spending my childhood listening to rock n pop I first ‘got’ classical music in about 1986 when I was leafing through my recently deceased grandfather’s record case one quiet sunny afternoon. I came across this one LP with a scenic cover and so gave it a spin on his inherited record player which was in my room.

Wowww ! One of those seminal moments whilst alone which changes a lad forever. It just bowled me over…

Still think that version is the best.

I went on to get seduced by Mozart and Bach, and the others but over the past few years I’ve come back to realise that Beethoven is the King. He could saw it off by the yard.

Classic FM is always on when I shoot (6yd target pistol in my garage), this accompanied me this morning. It didn’t do my shooting any good but it was relaxing to listen to. I looked it up on YouTube when I finished, the particular rendition seems to be played by a youth orchestra. As moving as the music are the comments that accompany the piece. Apparently it’s also the theme from Platoon, I must check that out one day.

I think ive posted this before but here is a better explanation as to why I like it.

I first heard this from a TV advert for British Airways, it was used in bits of the backing tune and I thought it sounded quite nice so I searched for it and found it on YouTube and then I searched for it on iTunes to add it to my library, I must be soft in the head because it made me a blubbering mess. I have listened to some other Operatic works similar to this but not had the same effect, it still invokes a lump in my throat when I listen to it now:

Dad introduced me to classical music at a very early age, each week he’d bring an LP home from the record library and I couldn’t help but listen to it. Some resonated, others failed to hit the spot spectacularly. The Last Night of the Proms on TV (425 lines back then) was always a must with Rule Britannia taking top spot, it still does. I’ve a lot to thank my father for but as always you don’t realise it at the time and by the time you’ve woken up it’s too late.

Pity the Union Jack is upside down.

My favourite by the best piano player.

My favourite by the best piano player.
I know a few people who have requested the 2nd movement for their funeral music (adagio un poco mosso - slowly move a little. Quite fitting).

It is absolutely sublime, and I can hardly imagine a finer sound accompanying them on to the next stage of life.

…and not too heavy on the banjos either, which is always to be welcomed.

The best guitar piece by the best player.

I had a friend at university whose father was quite an accomplished classical guitarist and gave lessons. His father met John Williams at a guitar convention somewhere and a few weeks later Williams phoned to speak to his father. My mate was in the house on his own and so answered the phone. Williams told him “My name’s John Williams and I met your father at the guitar convention”, to which my mate replied “Oh right, my Dad’s out at the moment. Was it about wanting guitar lessons or something, cos he does ‘em on a Thursday”.

To which Williams responded “Well that’s very kind, but I’m JOHN WILLIAMS”.

My mate not getting it said “Yeah, you said. So do you want lessons or not ?”

He had no interest in classical music and had never heard of JOHN WILLIAMS !!! 😆

Segovia, a very famous world renowned guitarist once said of Williams “His hands have been touched by God”. I have yet to hear at 76 years of age and a pathetic guitarist myself a more accomplished, fluid and finer guitarist. He is the Pavarotti, Lang Lang of the classical guitar world and I think we we will not see his like in our lifetime.
