An old Cumbrian term for owl. It is used in place names and house names e.g. Hullet Syke (house) and Hulleter (hamlet in the Rusland Valley). Many places start with Hull... meaning place of the owl/s similarly e.g. Hullockhowe and Hulls Wood.

think the word may have derived from the Norse language.
Two nights ago this hullet flew into my view whilst I was ratting! It's unusual to see a Tawny inside a building especially as this barn is home to a nesting Barn owl. There are many young rats at this site and I can see the attraction for the owl's interest.
