Over the last week or so we've had "people" emptying milk all over shop floors. Everywhere you go though are security guards. Could be an event, a car park, an office block, a bridge, whatever... people in high vis and "SECURITY" on the back.

So what is the point of employing security guards if they don't do anything? What is their purpose? I'm pretty sure if these bods tried pouring milk all over the shop in some of the rougher areas of London they'd end up a little ragged around the edges.

(note - I'm not dismissing the job of a security guard at all - just the premise to have them on site when this stuff happens and there is no intervention)

Half of store security i see couldn't secure their own zip they are there as a visual deterrent and nothing more and at £9 odd an hour not many will get stuck in when something goes badly wrong, to be fair there isnt much they can do apart from call the useless teenagers that pass for plod nowdays anyway

Can't remember where it was, but there was a case where a supermarket security bod was congratulated by his bosses for going above and beyond by helping a lady with her arm in a cast, load a massive trolley load of beer, wine and spirits into the back of her car.

Only to find out later that she had nicked the lot and bypassed the tills by going through the self checkout when the attendant had been distracted by another shopper.

Cue P45 and the JCP 🤦‍♂️🤣

Why put yourself at risk when the police will take 2hours to arrive then arrest the guard for assault.
If by some miracle they do arrest the protesters the courts will just let them go with a gentle tap on the wrist.

Security guards can only use ordinary powers of arrest (citizens arrest) to detain and, in England & Wales, that is restricted quite significantly when it comes to summary offences, like most shop left or pouring milk on the floor. So if they did intervene and apprehend, they could see themselves sued. So, they are normally instructed by management to stand back and observe, not intervene.

The French had the right idea. Did you see thoise pillocks who glued their hands to a main road, the Gendarmerie just ripped them off leaving them screaming. Persoanlly I think they should have taken a run up first as well.

The purpose of a “security guard” is to please the insurance company nothing else 😞

Pretty much a consensus that they aren't guards, merely "observers".

I think they need a rebrand in that case!

Primary issue is that the protesters usually have half a dozen camera weilding mates livestreaming it.

You only have to look at the two blokes that got a tug from the police for jumping on the guy that was yelling at the Queens coffin procession to see why people don't want to get involved - even if it is the right thing to do.

Away from the cameras... well, a swift nudge in the right place often prevents a recurrence!

Security guards with the blue stripe on their badge aren’t allowed to get hands on as there is no requirement from the security industry authority to complete the physical intervention module on their courses, Door supervisors with the orange stripe can- though not when working as retail security ,

I did see footage of an ex-boxer taking a trouble maker out with a punch. He was literally asking for it as he was challenging everyone to a fight.

Interesting @Waynemabe about the stripes. My wife has to take a SIA qualification as part of her job. Not the door/people facing side but managerial.

There’s two shades of blue as well one is Sg for retail security- and a different shade of blue is cctv, never seen the back office one
