That can depend on the barrel its compatibility with the pellet as some may work more efficient or less efficient than others in any given bore.True but I am fairly sure that a sub 12 springer pellet is up to maximum speed in little more than a typical pistol length barrel.
Some bores might need the barrel length to make the speed.
A shorter say 12 inch vs a 18 inch barrel has a slight time advantage its 1 to 2 milliseconds no more, an advantage in barrel harmonics in the shorter and thus more rigid barrel the amptitude might be of more benefit in theory and yet even that can be imediately negated by the longer barrel recieving appropriate dampening via a weight moderator bonded shrouding of suitable mass. whatever you choose.
The whole springer is a big tuning fork how you go about taming vibrations or controling the effect of any vibrations and harmonics of the shot cycle and how it acts in the overall gun is in fact real tuning, there is more ways to tame these shall we term them negative vibes LOL! than just piston mass and spring pre load etc. Mass in the right places around the gun can have similar effects to the overall performance x mass off the moving piston has, its just going about it from a diferent direction and yet arriving with the same or similar sum of its performance. Springers are real simple tech yet its all a balancing act to make it all work in harmony. No one aspect like say the barrel length conundrum is the answer all by its self its about matching/ tuning it all to make it work to the best of its efficiency quite how you go about this is not set in stone and what route you chose ..subjective.
