Hello Forum,

Newbie here who has just acquired an HW35 of 1978 vintage according to the serial number lookup I found (SN: 690954). I've had air rifles on and off over the years (Diana, then Meteor 4 (I think, bought new in around '78/79), then HW57 that I never really got to grips with) but only really plinking with mates and the kids but would like to shoot again and maybe a bit more seriously this time. This came up at a sale today for a reasonable price (I think? - £110) I liked the look of it so I took the plunge. So I was hoping for a bit of help with what I've got here. I don't know guns well but first question, is the stock walnut or beech? It looks like walnut to me but I'm really not sure. Also, does that mean it's a standard HW35 or something else? I did Google a bit but it wasn't very conclusive and I'm sure you guys are a lot more knowledgeable than Google! There is no foresight (and they're not exactly cheap!) but I won't be using open sights anyway.
It functions so I am going to put a few pellets through and see if it shoots OK, but I plan to take it apart, clean it, replace any worn components and reassemble before using it regularly. I've not taken a gun apart before but I've got a decent selection of tools and have taken plenty of cars and bikes apart over the years, as well as other bits & pieces and they usually still function afterwards! I'll also check the knowledge base here before doing anything too dangerous!

Any advice at all will be gratefully received!

Cheers,

I should add the stock obviously had a sling, as there is a hole for it on the stock. Sling and swivel are no longer there. I expect this affects the value but as for the missing foresight, doesn't really bother me at this stage. I am hoping at the very least I've got a better rifle than anything I could have bought new for £110. Plus I really do like the look of it and that will encourage to use it and look after it even more!

Well sir, firstly welcome aboard to the AGF!
Plenty of HW35 fans, owners and other threads running on the forum about this fine Weihrauch model (35’s been in continuous production since the 1950’s !)
What I suspect you have there is a (bargain!) HW35 Luxus - walnut stock (checkered pistol grip and flatter stock without finger groove - distinguishing it from a standard model)
Great guns with a lot of fans on here.
If you need advice on stripping it etc just shout - lots of us one here own them & have tinkered with them👍👍

Martin B is a bit of a pit of knowledge on these 35's Matt.
That's a lovely example, and the scope looks interesting too👍
Welcome onboard, you have a great looking and interesting rifle, and at a bargain price🤗

That is an exceptional gun for the money - many congratulations. The 35 is fairly simple to work on, thankfully. As mentioned above, there are vids on YouTube from @Tinbum regarding what is undoubtedly his favourite air rifle…

Also take note of his Rekord trigger adjustment video - that only takes a few minutes and gives you peace of mind the trigger is set up both safely and with a lovely crisp let-off.

It's a love\hate relationship if memory serves me...he hates to love it🤣
They are exceptional, and full of character, especially the older ones.
Mine is a 1975, in walnut, and in good shape, but a bit twangy, I must sort it out as it has sat for the best part of a year awaiting patiently.

Beauty!

Oh wow! OK well firstly thanks guys for all the messages and such a warm welcome. Really appreciate all the positivity👍 Very happy that I seem to have lucked out with this gun, I can tell you it doesn't happen often! I knew Weihrauch's were good guns and this one looked a little bit out of the ordinary. I bought it at the Harper Fields auction near Stroud this morning.
I'll look forward to getting my knowledge up to scratch over the next few weeks and will definitely call on those who know better than me!
Thanks again and look forward to being part of the forum. Cheers Matt

Yes, the lack of finger groove in particular made me realise Google can't tell you everything. Thanks so much for confirming what I've got, always helps! I'll be picking your brains again for sure 😃

Well done on your HW35 👍 I was bidding on a HW80, HW77, and AA TX200 but didn't win any of them 😐

Ah OK, were you there or bidding online? Shame you didn't get anything this time. I thought it was going that way for me too. I was looking at a BSA Meteor and a Supersport (nostalgic reasons mostly) which both went for more than I wanted to pay, so by the time it got to the two HW35's I wasn't hopeful. The first one wasn't as nice as this and sold for over the estimate so I expected this one to do the same. For some reason this one didn't. I just got lucky for once! I think most of the estimates were quite low. I was interested to see how much that TX went for. It looked nice but out of my league for sure!
