The other day I bought a Webley MkVI in .22.

That it is too loud for the garden was not a surprise having previously owned one in .177.

What I am wondering is whether it would be possible to fit a moderator/silencer/suppressor (whatever term members here prefer).

There is about 10mm from the tip of the muzzle to where the actual .22 barrel starts which is about 12.5mm in diameter.

Would it be possible to cut a thread inside the "false" barrel which could accept a 1/2 inch male adaptor for a moderator/silencer/suppressor?

Has anyone already tried something like this?
 
I've made a silencer for a Nagant revolver but it uses a steel liner loctited inside the barrel which in turn supports a 1/2 unf adapter that incorporates the barrel stop.

Complicated but it was important to me that it was strong enough and aligned perfectly.

The problem with threading the original barrel is that the pot metal is relatively weak. A better option maybe is to make a steel threaded insert that could be glued into the barrel recess with Loctite, and aligned with a silver steel rod while the loctite dries.

The insert could either be threaded internally and a 1/2 unf adapter made or a simpler externally threaded 1/2 unf insert

I hadn't considered the likely weakness of the pot metal.

I think I will stick to shooting the Webley indoors for now.

Good call, I've got both the 6" and 4" in .22 and looking at the barrel ,as it is also moulded into the front frame, it would be difficult to hold in a lathe which it needs in order to align the thread to the barrel so maybe too awkward to do
 
They did without silencers in the trenches in 1915 and, by God, so will I!
Quite agree, but trying to keep the neighbours happy doing a bit of back garden plinking, is not quite the same as the trenches.
I've had this problem a couple of times with a HW45 and Crosman 600, and fitted silencers/moderators to both, therefore avoided any conflict with the neighbours on the very rare occasions I've used either pistol.
 
The inner barrel on the Webley slides forward and backwards slightly to make a reasonable seal against the cylinder, so it wouldn't really be possible to mount a suppressor to that.
That leaves you with the outer barrel which could be a bit weak as mentioned above. If you do come up with a solution I'd suggest using the lightest weight suppressor you can get, several people on here make them and I would suggest either a 3D print or carbon fibre to reduce strain on the gun.
 
bl30, can you tell us more about the moderator for the HW45?
 
I have the 6" .177 version & find it quite subdued, I didn't realise the .22 would be that much louder so will definitely give that one a miss in the future.
