VPNs

In a previous life I worked for a high end rifle optics manufacturer, and I wasn’t able to access any of the dealers websites to prepare for my store visits as the IT department decided gunshops were inappropriate to look at on work devices. You couldn’t make it up!
A company I worked for would block certain sites and log that some one tried to access them after one of the office guys was caught looking at something he should not have been .
We did a depth transducer ( I worked at Silva UK and they had a Marine side ) a guy contacted us and asked if we could repair a fish finder he had bought . He had bought it in the US and it was going to cost a fair bit to send it back so he thought Silva may have been able to repair it or knew some one who could .

He gave Iain the warranty and repairs agent all the details he had regarding it and Iain looked it up online and the first hit lead to a gay club website and Iain was straight into the IT guys office and explain why he tried open that site .

Derek the IT guy ripped the urine out of him about it for months as Iain rushed through and was struggling to explain it .

The Fish Finder was marketed under the brand name of Bottom Line's Fishin' Buddy but he told Iain it was called a Bottom Buddy

Iain did ask the guy who did contracting work for Silva and he got it repaired for the guy .

I can’t pretend that I understand this VPN stuff, and was about to ask what it was, but I’m now getting the impression that it allows a user to make anonymous posts and the user cannot be traced. Is that the case?
You know in 90’s movies when the hacker is bouncing their address all around the globe so the can’t be tracked? That’s basically a VPN. You can choose which country your location is broadcast from amongst other things. Think of it like hiding your caller ID

it lets you hide your IP address by using another provided by the service.
Has privacy implications for sure.
Also allows you to bypass "geofencing" sites that require you to be in a certain country to access them, you simply choose the right country in the VPN app. e.g. allowing you to watch UK television whilst overseas

It sounds very much like it to me .. This was my question if a member is banned does it mean he can re join again because of the VPN?

Some think they can but even the VPN companies say you can't be fully hidden.

Does a VPN make you anonymous?

A VPN does not make you anonymous. In fact, no internet privacy tool can completely hide your online presence or identity. The same goes for browsing the internet anonymously.

When we refer to an anonymous VPN, we really mean a VPN that does everything it can to maintain your privacy. If you only need an anonymous VPN to protect you from snoopers who are trying to find out what you are doing online, then yes, your online identity will be protected. However, that protection only goes so far.

With or without a VPN, being 100% anonymous online is impossible. No matter how many steps you take, you could still be unwittingly sharing and revealing your identity and location right now.

Yes mate that sounds just about it---when the message came up last night i messaged a mod asking for them to check if i had one??!!! As it's something i no nothing about--i was told if i did not know about them then there should not be one --sounds like it's something that you had to download and set up so you will be aware of it?? if it hides your IP address sounds like something these pervs and grooming lot must use? as same as scammers --it is reassuring that we are being protected as much as possible on here from scammers with the mods trying to keep them away great stuff ATB

Thank you, I’m getting the picture. Fortunately I have no need of such things. I was just concerned that I might have a VPN without being aware of it, and I too am relieved, reassured and grateful that the mods on here are making sure that the rest of us have some protection against devious activity. Thank you AGF mods.

What kinda sucks is there's a lot of valuable older posts with instructions or tear-downs on here with images hosted on imgur which you can't see without a VPN in the UK :(

I hope that we'll be able to temporarily switch the VPN on to view that kind of post
and that as long as we turn it off before posting an item for sale we should be ok
