VPN,so many

I’d like to use a VPN but we’re on Starling and the latency can be on the high side, I dare not risk adding anything that might increase it further.

Gonna get me a vpn.
Sorry,must have been asked before...
I'm not very tech savy,so I just need it to be easily downloaded and very little else to do with it.
I did have one many years ago when I lived abroad which was part of a package with the broadband...
So,which one is best value for my dosh, baring in mind what I have said above about ease of use.
It does look as if most are best value if on a 2yr deal

What I will say is that the one I had all that time ago slowed down the speed somewhat.
All answers would be appreciated
Been using Surfshark for 2 years now issues

Opera is based in Norway but owned by a Chinese investment company which is ironic as private VPN use is banned in China

Have used Surfshark and found it to have servers in many countries, plus different protocols to use in the Settings. Normally they'll offer a really cheap 2 year upfront deal with 3 months plus for free. However, as mentioned, make sure auto-renew is OFF. The normal subscription is fairly costly! PS, I'm not sponsored by them!

Recently joined Surf shark and so far it's been good £61.24 for 27 months, worked out quite a bit cheaper than Nord.

Thats the problem with auto renewals, some are deep down and hard to get to..is surfshark the same,

Aha very timely thread. Missus asked me to set up a VPN on Friday. My TP-Link Deco Mesh router claims to be compatible with NordVPN, SurfShark etc. so allegedly you just subscribe and enter the credentials in the router setup and bingo - all connected devices can then use it without the need to install any software on each one.

So I bought a Nord subscription and followed all the instructions and.......................turns out it's a crock. Simply did not work so after wasting hours and their tech support guy being useless (telling me to select menu options that didn't exist) I just got refunded later the same day.

I'd still like to set it up but clearly it's not always as straight forward as their sales gumph suggests.

Although I'm not even convinced they do anything useful these days - I mean they actually don't hide IP addresses (as the mods on here have confirmed) they don't give you anonymity, they stop a lot of streaming services working these days and some websites block access coming from VPNs. So on one level are you not just paying for an effective restriction and more hassle?

Hi

Proton VPN is suggested/recommended on other Forums - seems to work for a free version........
Obviously a 'rabbit-hole' if you delve deeper and your 'vintage' has some tech-savvy!

Naomi Brockwell seems to keep it simple if you want to go down hole:

I use proton VPN I’ve not noticed any slowing of speeds and works well I’m just using the free version which works great for my needs and is easy to use I put it on when in need and off when I don’t with a simple press of a button. also I pair it with the brave browser. The brave browser is great for stopping annoying trackers and adds especially on YouTube without having to pay YouTubes subscription.

Somethings to consider that a lot of people are unaware of when using a VPN

What a VPN does:
  1. Hides your IP address
Websites see the IP address of the VPN server, not yours.
  2. Encrypts your internet traffic
Your ISP, employer, or local network can’t see what sites you’re visiting — just that you’re connected to a VPN.
  3. Bypasses geo-blocks and censorship
You can appear to be browsing from another country.

What a VPN doesn’t do:
  1. Doesn’t hide what you do from websites
If you’re logged into Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc., they still know it’s you — VPN or not.
  2. Doesn’t stop browser fingerprinting
Sites can track you using things like screen size, fonts, extensions, and other unique identifiers.
  3. Doesn’t prevent tracking cookies or scripts
Ad networks can still track you unless you’re using blockers or privacy-hardened browsers.
  4. Doesn’t make you anonymous to the VPN provider
Your VPN provider can see your traffic — that’s why choosing a trustworthy, no-log VPN (like Mullvad or Proton VPN) matters.
This was soooo helpful thanks for allowing me to watch YouTube without the annoying adverts or coughing up a monthly subscription. Excellent stuff thanks
