I almost passed out 😬

Like many of our customers, you've been enjoying a promotional price of £122.35* a month for your services. When your contract comes to an end on 6 June 2026, this will change to £239.83* a month. Monthly price of Virgin Media main services will increase each April by £3.50.

So I hopped online to see my renewal choices.

Exactly the same package
£108

Yep, if you are out of contract they will price gouge.

From what I gather, it’s because if you are out of contract they cannot annually increase the price, so by having a high cost and heavy discount whilst in contract, then discount removes at the end of contract, they force all customers to renew AND get a bonus payment as well for the uncontracted period.

Unfortunately Virgin is still the fastest service in my area.

Interestingly enough, they seem to be using Community Fibre infrastructure.https://communityfibre.co.uk/

I know this because CF have a rather large box on reg corner of my block, but state they do not cover my area.

There's a lot of money to be saved by telling Virgin that you want to leave , I did it a few years ago and was inundated with phone calls offering amazing deals , the final call offered me a year for £1 per month , try it !

Keep at them I was paying that, phone, TV no Sky Sport or Movies. I got mine down to £54 18 months. When they say they cant go any lower, quote that others have it much lower, and ask to speak to a supervisor. They slowly whittle it down but it's worth it.

£108 was pretty much as low as they’ll go.
That’s for the 1gb volt plus broadband, the maximum tv package including sky sports and movies.
At least now we can sit and whinge there’s nothing to watch of an evening knowing it’s costing less than last year I suppose.

I was paying £58 per month but it went up quite a bit, had a search on sky website found a similar deal and phoned virginmedia explained I can get the same package for less from sky and after a bit of polite haggling I got a better package (faster broadband) for £37.

Always worth a polite haggle and having other providers prices to hand.

I got the same and they threw in Netflix

But that includes his broadband which he needs to watch free stuff. I've been with virgin since day one, still have the blueyonder email. When we moved house I stayed with them but wanted to get rid of everything but broadband. After haggling they said £45 a month. Said no chance I can get it for £20 . They wouldn't budge so I cancelled outright. 3 days later a nice lady from their retention team rang me and matched the price. Bingo. You have to be prepared to hold your ground and cancel.

We're out in the sticks and when we moved after purchasing we could only get BT at a super slow speed for around £24 per month, a huge wakeup call as we were on Virgin for years and it was super fast, a couple of years ago, we were having the road dug up and I spotted the van doing the work and asked what service they were working on, it was BeFibre broadband, a quick phone call to them and they offered 900gb plus buying out the last 7 months of our BT contract all for an extra fiver to what we were originally paying BT.

My first ever email address was @blueyonder.co.uk. It's still active but only used as a bucket nowadays. I'm convinced they used to sell them to scammers. It's the only email I've got that still receives crap.

I rang virgin a month ago, wanted to put it up to £149 a month.
Said i cannot afford it as i've retired, got it now for for £58 a month,1 gig broadband & netflix,no landline or sports channels.

Last time my virgin was up for renewal I told them I wanted to speak to retentions or I was leaving got it for less than I was paying

First time I tried to renegotiate a new contract with Virgin I said I wanted to cancel and went straight to the retention team. Asked what the best they could do on my 75 a month contract and said they could do 55. I told them no as new customers were able to get an offer for the same deal for 35 and I didn’t think they was fair. Was told they was the best they could do.

I asked what’s to stop me cancelling my contract (solely in my name) and have the wife sign up as a new customer to get the deal price. To my surprise was told nothing was stopping me from doing that.

A few weeks later when the I remembered and wife was at home I phoned to put the plan into action and before I could ugly tell them I was going to cancel and get my wife to sign up they said I could do the same package for 32 a month and as I was close to April I would also skip the annual price hike. Too good a deal to pass up.

Does leaving me scratching my head as to working out how or when to get the best price out of them when your contract is up.
