Tyre fitters

My son took a new tyre and a loose wheel from the Fireblade he owned at the time into a local AMS tyre depot, he left it with them to fit the tyre and balance the wheel, when he returned to collect it they put it in the boot of his car for him but it wasn't until he got home that he noticed that they had scratched the paint off the rim down to the alloy of the wheel, when he went back to ask them about it they denied all knowledge of the damage and intimated that the damage was probably done when he put the wheel back on the bike.

Have to ask why anyone would take their cars/bikes to the likes of ATS/Kwik-fit or Halfords. Find an independent tyre fitter with good reviews.
I had to go to Halfords a few years ago to have a headlight bulb fitted in the works Vito van ( works policy).
Next morning, in the dark had to stop and refit the bulb correctly as they were illuminating everything 20 ft in the air.

I always ask them "you do use rim protectors don't you..?"

And to be fair, haven't had any issues so far apart from them fitting the wrong tyre once which was quickly rectified.

They should all have rim protectors these day, as its "Alloy Central" on 90% of cars, they're just being lazy

What is it with tyre fitters now. they all seem to think its ok to mark your alloys when fitting a tyre!
kwik-fit,national tyres and Formula one what ever, all put scratches right around the lip of black alloys.
dread getting tyres dones
Put in a damage claim , You should not have to put up with that its just rough operators on there part
Tyre machines these day if used properly should not even go near the rim .

I blame Halfrouds, you cant expect these kids to know all that for what they get. My nipper (16) did one saturday morning, then came home. He knew how to change windscreen wipers, because he helped me, but this was a 30k beemer....boys doing a mans job

I use https://www.wheelhousetyres.co.uk/ in Brum, brill, I had Stiff Heindenaus I already owned to go on narrow stove enameled vintage rims, so was a bit twitchy, someone recommended them, and yep not a single mark, plus bead perfect alignment the works.

ATB, ED

I take it, you just took the rims with the tyres. Do they do the complete job (as in wheels in place). Only I've got a mate who lives that way

Kwik Fit once had the wifes car for new tyres (don't ask) and enquired whether they could check the brakes whilst it was on the ramp. This was politely declined as it was booked for a service with our indie a few days later. They needed a 4 ft breaker bar to undo the wheel nuts to do the brakes. Lug bolts had been overstretched and had to be replaced. Use them at your peril !

Kwik Fit cross threaded the stud in the cylinder head putting the exhaust manifold back. I had to get another cylinder head and fit it.
I have to ask what they were even doing fitting an exhaust manifold
They are not fit to change the oil and tyres obviously :(

This was a while ago when they did exhausts as well. They took off the exhaust manifold so they could separate the joint where the downpipe connected. They used oxy/acetylene to cut off bolts at the joint because they could not be removed with a spanner.
They then put the exhaust manifold back before fitting the new exhaust.

Kwik fit are not on their own. A new business started up near where I lived. At the time I had a Volvo 360 GLS 2.0. I took it for an exhaust and they were ages doing it. I got impatient and kept pestering them but they came up with all sorts of excuses.
I suspected at the time they did not have one in and and were trying to get one so they could do the job.
I was right about them not having one in as I found out a couple of weeks later. Around town the car run alright. I was on the motorway and I passed a car and he accelerated when I wanted to get back into lane 2. Normally I could have put my foot down and left him standing but it would not pick up.
When I got home I jacked the car up and the long delay was due to them fitting an exhaust for the 1.4 Volvo. The time it took was because they fabricated strips of metal to make the smaller diameter bore meet the larger bore of the exhaust.
I went back to the garage, this was about a fortnight later, and they had closed down. I don't wonder!!!

My old Frontera needed a clutch. Went to Mr Clutch (part of Halfords). Job done and later that night I went to put the motor in first gear and the gear literally came away in my hand. The gear stick alloy housing was held together with brand new hose clips! Buggers had dropped the gearbox and broken the housing. You can't get the part so....... Local engineering company welded the housing for a tenner, sorted and of course Mr Clutch denied everything
