The secret of a long life?.

my neighbour lived to 94,
Diagnosed type 1 diabetic from childhood, walked 4 miles to school rain, shine or snow.
Cycled 10 miles each way to work before moving here.

Drank many G&Ts, was made to retire from a shoe factory at 70 smoked until she was 75.
Cycled to town for shopping until 80.
Fell down stairs and broke her pelvis in 2020 and was housebound, if not essentially living daily life moving 6 feet from chair to bed reckon she would have made 100.

In Sweden we enjoy the longest expected average lifespan in Europe at 84.1 years compared to the UK at 81.7 years.

Especially male lifespan is exceptional at 81.8 years compared to UK 79.4 years.

But more importantly - health years!

Sweden has one of the highest levels of healthy life years in Europe, making the gap between Sweden and the UK even wider in health than in total life expectancy.

On average, Swedish people can expect to live healthy and disability-free lives until around 72–73 years of age.

In contrast, the United Kingdom has seen a declining trend, with healthy life years dropping to around 61 years.

This means a striking difference of about 11–12 healthy years in Sweden's favor.

A Swedish man lives nearly 88% of his life completely free of severe functional limitations, while a British man spends only about 76% of his life in full health.

Sweden has historically focused on preventative healthcare, healthy working conditions, and heavily subsidized, high-quality elder care.

Conversely, the UK has struggled with deep socioeconomic inequalities.

Over the past decade, public health and healthy life years in poorer UK regions have experienced significant declines.

That’s because we spend all our money on everybody except our own citizens 😡

I have no opinion about that but I believe everyone has his own responsibility to do whatever one can to keep and if possible improve the health one have.

Things like living a life completely free of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and unhealthy food, strive towards and keep a healthy BMI.

To exercise, work physically, be mindful of enough sleep and avoid stress etc.

You have to realise @JohnnySweden that England is a very overcrowded place. People are living in little boxes squashed against each other and that results in social pressure and stress. It is a very noisy place and dirty. Even the air is terrible, so it is inherently a very bad place to live and life expectancy will be significantly reduced. There once was hope of escape to Spain, Ireland etc, but that possibility has now gone. All European Countries are now severely restricting immigration.

Not on a rubber dingy🤭

My take on things. I believe we are born with a pre programed ticking clock and when it's time to go we go . In my family we live until late 70,s healthy eating/ living or a chain smoking, fried food eater or alcoholic it makes no difference. Quality of life is the key. That's why I m buying another motorbike. All the best.

Well Barney - everyone to his own, but this is not good advice in my opinion.

Smoking is maybe the biggest destroyer of health and drinking isn't far behind.

You do what you want to do of course. Smoking, alchohol, obesity, inactivity in that order will kill you pretty quickly and rob you of many years of happy, healthy life.

On the other hand, random chance pays a part too. yesterday I discovered that an ex colleague of mine had died in a bizarre accident. He was riding his bike and he had those clip on pedals on it which fasten onto his shoes. He came to a traffic light and stopped and could not get his feet out of the clips. He fell over of course towards the herb and bashed his head on the edge of it. RIP. Random, stupid and unexpected.

Some people might think this was a good reason not to ride a bike or even to exercise, but on a population basis, riding a bike is a very good thing to do to maintain your health. Random stupid events like this are just that, otherwise we would never walk under a tree after some poor sod had a branch fall on his head and kill him.

Tony, my reply was specific to my family history.
We get to late 70,s and drop down dead , with scant regards to any lifestyle choice. 👍

True, I've been to the UK twice and it was truly a shock!!

People everywhere, just everywhere and many of them didn't even speak English...!?! 😳

The roads were crowded and - most striking - no forests, just spots of woodland here and there, mostly agricultural landscape och huge cities, everyone of them with hundreds of thousands inhabitants.

It was impossible even to see the sky with the stars any night, the light pollution was intense.

I was there once in November and people walked around in T-shirts during the winter, it was like +20c!! They hadn't had had any single snowfall even in late November.

It felt like high summer but the sun set like 1900 - truly weird..!! 😳

This is what the office of national statistics say
National life tables, UK 2011 to 2013-2.pdf
With increased stress, pollution in air and water, too many harmful chemicals in foods, not enough physical activity, less access to health care, increased alcohol and drugs consumption, harmful and unnecessary medications.
It has got to be declining rapidly

The other thing is…there’s no point living to a 100 if you don’t do the things you want to and have to live life like a monk 🤷‍♂️
I like to enjoy things in moderation and make the most of it 👍 anyway you can live a so called clean life and still get hit by a bus lol 😝

Well, I am 75 and a bit and I am not expecting to drop down dead any time soon. I walk about 10,000 steps a day, climb about with my guns hiding in hedges and behind walls in a hilly area, I ride my bike when the weather is nice. I can do everything I was doing when I was twenty, if a bit slower, and I am having a pretty good time. I lost a bit of weight recently so i am now a touch under twelve stone instead of near on thirteen, and I am buggered if I am giving up yet.

The actual facts show that people who are active, avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking too much, live much longer than other people USUALLY.

There is no denying that random cancers get people who look like athletes. Look at what Happened to Chris Hoy - and at such a young age, with his prostate cancer. Bloody awful and such bad luck.

Nevertheless a bit of knowledge of what you can do to improve your chances of a long and healthy life is worth its weight in gold. Does it guarantee that YOU are going to live to 95 and die with a forty year younger blonde on top of you? No - it doesn't, but it doesn't half improve your chances of that.

Heavy drinking when younger
Vast amounts of aerobic training and competitions.
Combined with working and partying hard .
Years of xtreme sports
Many many many broken bones
10 operations dicky ticker
Hard physical jobs .
60 and knackered.
I feel the cold hand of death on my shoulder every morning and the peace and comfort of the grave is calling to me .
Still mustn't grumble it's Christmas soon .
I've just put the sprouts on .
Semi and soon to be fully retired with more hunting than I can manage so I will hopefully kick the arse out of the next 10 years and think myself lucky if I make it . I have zero interest in a decrepit old age .
My dad however is 90 and remarkably good but I doubt my cards will play that way .
" Carpe diem".
Grab the fish .
