This should prove a very interesting debate lads.
Two charts here for .22 and .177, both at full power, excellent accuracy, grain weights, ft/lb energy retained at variable distances out to 40 meters and trajectory involved.

For instance my chosen pellet for hunting is .177 cal, 4.52, 7.87g.
The chart tracks the performance I`m getting/ expecting.
With .22 cal, my chosen pellet is 5.52, 13.43g, again the chart tracks the performance out to 40 meters.

Thoughts/ experiences lads ?

From the late 70’d Up until recently always used .22 for hunting, last few months.177

I guess at longer ranges you’d need to be more accurate with a .177 IF 1-2ftlb is critical at that range which it can be with a misplaced shot

So far everything I shot with a .177 has had the desired outcome.

A nice Thursday morning 🍿post mr iceman 😂

Interesting - what setup was used for this?

Any info on .25 power retention?

I think both as accurate to 40 and as effective. Little more allowance for the trajectory of .22. But my choice would be more around area shooting (close quarters around buildings and over penetration risk) or 30yrds up a tree as examples . .22 for rats to 25yrds for me would be better suited. A rabbit at 35 then either or maybe a .177 jsb heavy easier to hit the spot.

I've got 2 x 0.22s, for my next gun I may go 0.177 for some variety..... And the pellets are so much cheaper!!

Generaly the bigger the caliber the more damage done its really noticeable in ,22 compared to .177.

I hunt successfully with both and as others have said if you hit them in the right spot it's instant lights out regardless of calibre.

I`ve shot lighter pellets now for around 10 years for static hunting.
In .22 cal ,with a full power rifle, I set my zero for 27 yards with the pellet staying within the kill zone and hold under never required from 8 yards to 31.5 yards.
In .177 cal`, 20 yards to 38 yards zero.
The JSB Exact Express 4.52, 7.87 g I`ve pushed to 16 yards to 38 yards zero.
The 13.43g .22 cal, at full range, (43.7 yards ) giving on average - 8.47 ft/lbs. with a maximum arc of 2.48 inches.
The 7.87g .177 cal, at 43. 7 yards giving on average - 6.96 ft/lbs with a maximum arc of 1.62 inches.
As some of the lads picked up on, is that 1 ft/lb to 1.5 ft/lbs power difference needed within the parameters of a 12 ft/lb air rifle ?

For me, accuracy trumps power every time.

Hi Davey, Guns Calibres are are like motorcycles my other obsession,
i do not condemm people who ride MZ,s 0r CZ,s if thats there thing then good for them,
i do a bit of leg pulling i/e Harley riders bikes i call tractors only to friends i know who ride them,
, each to their own tastes as long as it has two wheels and a motorcycle engine thats great.
long live variety.

Love this chart , I shoot 13,43 in .22 I AA, s410 Cloverleaf tuned , and 10.34 in 177, HW100 tuned both with fantastic hunting results, thanks to the gunsmiths

I choose to shoot .177 and don’t see any reason to change. From a hunting perspective I wouldn’t take a shot I didn’t feel comfortable making. A .177, .22 or whatever calibre you choose placed into your quarry’s brain is going to drop it. Nuff said 👍👍

This big, bad bunny was dropped with a single shot at 40 yards with an Air Arms S510 Carbine in .177 cal.

There was actually two this size and they were both dispatched under similar circumstances, but a couple of days apart.

Nevertheless, both went cleanly with one shot, one kill, no fuss, job done.... happy landowner.
.177 works for me. (y)
