Hello all

Im in the process of designing a small garden range so we can go out and shoot in all weathers. Ive got the shooting area almost finished.

Can anyone suggest some ricochet free target setups? As we have gardens adjoining us etc

I wondered if the pellet trap type holders where any good? Or the best type or back stop to prevent ricochet.

This was in Airgun World a while back and l always thought it was a good idea….

I used a old file cabinet that I removed the draws , left the rollers in so it has two shelves if needed for knock downs .And used two paving stones as the backdrop . It's fairly quiet and starting to look a bit war ridden but will last a couple of years before the paving stones need replacing . Also put clips to hang targets and hooks to hook hanging ones . I collected the pellets and melted them last year in a 14cm pellet catcher that's very quiet now to shoot but weights a ton . The cabinet is great as collects most pellets and can be left where it is .

The main problem with shooting in residential areas is noise. . The noise from the guns can be silenced but the sound of the shots striking the targets will draw attention to your activity.... and repetitive noise is really annoying to neighbours.

Food for thought when it comes to backstops and the choice of targets.

Good point made above. If possible chat with the neighbours and let them know what you’re doing and that you are making it 100% safe. Invite them round to have a look and a go!

I can thoroughly recommend: https://www.tomstargets.co.uk/shop/p/airgun-bell-target-z83y4-a8be9-ffxd2

I bought one of their pellet traps from them, it was the 6mm version and you can hear it laugh when shooting air pellets at it. It comes with an interchangeable faceplate for 14cm and 17cm targets, the targets are held in place with little neodimium magnets and the assembled trap is quite heavy with a sloped backplate and catches all my pellets.

I have an old kitchen drawer layered with rags and cardboard, it's not silent but it's a decent backstop

When I lived in suburbia I used noise from the surrunding to my advantage.

For exemple when a neighbour started his petrol lawnmover, nobody noticed me shooting, same as when another neighbour had loud music on and danced in her livingroom.

I always shot from inside of the house, with the suppressor too inside...

I do the same as mentioned above. Concrete wall is my ultimate backstop but generally looking for that to be the failsafe so in front of that goes a big cardboard box stuffed with scraps of carpet and underlay I pulled up. As said, you do need to replace the box from time to time.

Another good idea I saw was get a plastic storage box with lid. 80+ litre sort of size. Cut a hole in one side around 15 x 15cm then use a strong durable tape to go over the hole. Fill with soil if you’ve got some spare in the garden or sand is even better. Stick your target over the tape and just go over the hole with fresh tape periodically. Nice solid, reliable pellet stop that will have plenty of longevity and minimal patching up.
Should be good left out in all weathers

Another good tip, low level radio/music in the back ground will drown out loading/shot/impact noises

For a quiet backstop take a trip to your local carpet shop they often have old pattern books they need to get rid of.
They usually give them away.
This is what I did. I used a plastic storage box and hung 7 of the carpet samples independently and only attached at the top so that impact could be absorbed as they swung. A .22 at 10 yards has barely managed to reach carpet no 3.

I got a wee 2ft square sided pallet from work. Up on one end ,the rear wall timber is about 20mm thick. I got 2 carpet squares screwed into the base/ back wall ,plus a paving slab behind everything. I pin targets to the carpet. Not had any pellets come out of the box yet. They seem to samwich between the carpet tiles. I shoot from inside the kitchen and only when my neighbours are at work.
