I bought this from here last year with good intentions of it being a winter project but that didn't happen so it is now my Summer .

A BSA Meteor mk5 .22 with a TH serial number which dates it between 1979-1993. Not shot it yet but will do that sometime over the weekend and chrono it.

My plan is vague as to how I want her to look but for now I will strip her and see what if anything is required internally.

The stock is a bit bruised and battered with a few scuffs scrapes and dents. Should have plenty of hours of fun with stripper and sandpaper 😄.

Will put updates on as and when things get done, enough if me waffling as I am sure you all want to see photos

Judging by those chrono figures ,tart up the outside ,don,t touch the inside!
The sensible part of my brain agrees with you but the itchy fingers are just ready and waiting to strip the mechanicals and clean give them a good clean up.

Shame the iron sights are missing - getting harder to find nowadays and I’m sure lots of old Meteor’s have become donors for Airsporter & Mercury restoration’s?!

All stripped and ready for a good clean

The compression tube has a couple of minor dents that will hopefully smooth out

Piston washer will be replaced

Lastly the spring , not sure here, it does have a slight vend if you look at the part at the top of the photo

If any wiser more knowledgeable members could suggest do I change or keep the spring ??

So far So good

Watching this with interest, as I picked up a cheap meteor the same year as yours from Kempton arms fair, it is in the same condition as yours. Due to moving soon, I have put it on the back burner until we move, but an tips you can give me are welcome.

Sending you a message John - great work so far ! All the usual things you’ve mentioned are good things to focus on and YES I would replace that spring. Also the Mk5’s are renowned for the articulated cocking lever grating against the inside of the stock - IF the little plastic insert is missing (usually fixed by a stupid staple !!) often the plastic insert is gone/damaged - leaving the metal staple sitting proud and grating against the cocking lever.

My last mk5 managed to produce 11fpe with original mainspring. Had the dome piston head machined down and opened the transfer port. Shot lovely . I believe BSA didn’t do this so not to take sales away from the mercury

@Peddy machining poston heads and opening transfer ports is way above my capability and expertise. Thanks for the input it's appreciated.
