Stuck bolts help please

If you can and have a pillar drill --put the screw head bit into the chuck and have your job held in place pull down on the drill and turn the chuck by hand that way your getting the pressure in the right place and because you have the job held in place and are pull down the screw bit should not slip off
I've got a pillar drill but it's had to be mothballed along with my other machines until I find a buyer.
No joke, if I could set the drill and bandsaw up at home I would, but a one bed flat isn't really conducive. Plus the extractor makes a right racket. (y)

Hi. I'm having a right kerfuffle trying to remove the two little bolts that hold the barrel retaining plate in my HW45. I have 3 different calibre barrels for it but can't try them because of the stuck bolts. I've tried penetrating oil- no dice. I've also heated it 5 or 6 times with a blowlamp quite extremely. Also tried heating right up and then quenching in cold water to 'shock' it. Nope.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Hey pal have you seen those screw extractor's from Screwfix I think, smaller version of the stud ones . You drill a hole and they have a reverse thread to unwind the screw

Top lever off and with it held (protected) in a vice tap the edge of the screw head with a centre punch in the direction you want it to go...

I have. Trust me, I researched extractors well before even thinking of asking here. I mean, how hard can it be right? (y)

i will say i read through most of the posts
i just did a P-2, HW75, P-1
drilled everyone out and used an extractor on every damn one of them, if the head snaps of you will run the threaded portion left to the bottom of the hole but easy to get out, so if the screw head snaps of clean it is better
i used a 2mm drill bit a tap handle and this style remover
so how hard could it be VERY HARD
you need 2mm drill bits more than one the chance of you breaking one is high
the bit if you can find one should be carbide
remember you will need a handle for the extractor so you can push down and twist
and the plate that the little screws are holding will be glued down as weel and it fits so tight it will need to be plied out and then made a little smaller just to reinstall
so i have done 4 HW pistols and all were a PITA

i reinstalled 12.9 quality screws

I hate extractors. When one breaks they're difficult to get out. Left-handed drill bit, close to tapping size, in a pistol drill - as you drill the core, you're also trying to unscrew the bolt. On larger diameter bolts it can also help to jam the bit but no good for such small diameters.
Alternatively, place a nut on top and weld through the centre of the nut then use preferably a socket or spanner
Best of luck

we have all broke an extractor off in a bolt but not all extractors are the same
and look, you drill a 2mm hole in a screw that has maybe a 2.5mm minor diameter the chances of snapping the head off is 50-50 and the screw type extractor i used would not break
so out of the 6 screws i took out 5 came out with the extractor, one top snapped off and it came out with the drill just twisting in my fingers

I WILL SAY THIS DO NOT INSTALL WEIHRAUCH SCREWS BACK IN
they are soft as hell and the hex is not sizes well and are over sized
the 2mm hex should be tight

I haven't got any advice that's not allready been given.

Heat, penetrating fluid, tapping to break the seal on threads. I have had success heating WD40 on stuck pins and screws. Heat to the point it boils and smokes. Probably not good advice 🤣 as it could combust but I find that boiling can really pop stuck things.

The torx bit slightly oversized and hammered into the rounded Alan key head is a good one I've used before many times 👍

Hope you get sorted mate. If all fails a skilled engineer or such can drill them out.

There is another option you could try and that is use a parallel steel punch that’s about 5mm and hit it hard with a hammer squarely on the head, not only will this loosen the countersunk part of the head joint but it will also make the Allen key hole slightly smaller and less likely to slip.

so for those who have never done this
on paper it seems simple but it is not
you have a 2lb plus gun opened up with the frame up in the air, so you are holding that as you work on the screw times 2
i guess you could put it i a vice with soft jaws and at the same time you are trying not to damage the rear sight
with extra hands it would be easier, by yourself not so much
the stuff they use is clear not blue, red or green
it is like they put the plate on squeeze on the glue and install the 2 little screws
now with thread lock of some kind the threads have thread lock on them but these screws are setting in a puddle of glues so all of the countersunk area and the threads are glued in place
i have tried heat also i guess you could take the cocking handle off and soak it in acetone but will that take the finish off
at this point my advise is, don't even put a wrench on them drill and extract
and for those that have not had the fun to do this job to make your HW45 the 3 caliber pistol it could be good luck

It takes a big man to admit defeat.
I am not a big man.
Therefore I'm sending the whole shebang to @UncouthJ who has very kindly offered to sort it properly with the correct tools and knowhow. Nice one mate! I'll also send that .25 microgroove barrel for inspection. Many thanks. (y)

Before retirement that was a big part of my week !!....I would go in to a list some days.. my hammer impact wrench was a vital part of my box...rounded out / snapped off bolts were the bane of my bloody life.. all the above can and do work .. soak in wd40 and then slightly tighten before trying to slacken with an impact wrench worked often.. just go slow ..a lot of the time it ended up drilling and extracting because of my impatience... best of luck..

I was very lucky with the one I brought with 2 barrels second hand the bolts came out easily and now I have changed them for I hope better bolts.
Lets us know how you get on.
