Officer who shot Chris Kaba faces misconduct probe

The Met Police officer who was cleared of murder after shooting Chris Kaba will face a gross misconduct hearing, the police watchdog has said.

When these marksmen have had enough and hand in their firearms certificates then what?

They will have many more handing In their Firearms authorisation as they did the last time and very few applying for the role.

Quote
The Metropolitan Police received just six applications during its most recent armed officer recruitment drive as hundreds quit following an officer being charged with the murder of Chris Kaba.

The Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs) is made up of around 2,500 Met police officers who work as volunteers with no extra pay. On top of the half a dozen who applied to join the Specialist Firearms Command, more than 250 AFOs left the unit between April and December last year.

In contrast to the recent departures, only 22 armed officers left in the 12-month period leading up to March 2023.
End Quote.

Some will be due to retirement or moving roles mind you .

From what I have read about the whole sorry state of affairs, the Officer did the right thing based on known intelligence, hind sight is a wonderful thing... at least Kaba isnt taking up a prison cell for a while before being allowed to carry on being an upstanding model citizen

Personally, I’d give Sgt. Blake a medal… He did what he was trained to do. He made a judgement which has been proven to be correct under the circumstances. The individual who got shot was a victim of his own actions. I have very little sympathy for him.

He should have got a commendation, not dragged through the criminal justice system and now the discipline process. I gather the IOPC firmly have their fingers in this and I wonder who they’re trying to appease at the expense of this poor police officer.

I also understand the judge, prior to the conclusion of the trial, gave the officers name and address which was disgusting.

This has nothing to do with justice and I wouldn’t be surprised if officers around the country hand there firearms permits in as a result.

During my travels, advise on cobras came in two parts.
1st. The snake will not bite unless threatened. 2nd. The snake decides if you are a threat.
Whether it be by mistake or malicious intent, the nature of our sport puts us at an elevated risk of being reported as," an armed suspect."
Any armed response unit will consider us a threat and act accordingly, until convinced otherwise.
The killing of Harry Stanley, when wrapped chair leg was mistaken for sawn off shotgun, bears witness to this.
In the case of Kaba the 1st mistake was having a murder trial when body cam footage clearly recorded events.
. This then compounded by statements in regard Kaba's criminal history. Which given that those involved did not know who was driving, is immaterial to the action taken and reeks of justifying an action after the event. Totally unnecessary in this instance.
A lesson we can take from this is, if challenged by armed Police, listen carefully, do what you are told and save any response and explanations until they are satisfied you are no longer a threat.
