So what's the point of a 4 x 32 scope?

I used 4x32 Tasco silver antler on my HW80 Lazaglide, Webley Vulcan, Theoben Fenman from the late eighties all the way to 1998 for hunting.
Brilliant scope, never had any issues & bagged Rabbits, Magpies, Crows, Rooks, Woodies, Rats & tree rats out to 30yds with no trouble. It was only FT & HFT that popularised huge variable mag scopes & they bled into hunting etc.

Only went to variable power when I got back into airguns & I have:
3 of Hawke 2-7x32
3-12x40 Hawke
2 of Cerato 2-9x32
Bsa 1-4x20
PAO 4-12x40
Vector Marksman 10x44

So a pretty diverse selection.

Out of them I really love the Marksman 10x44, good optic quality, PX down to 10yds & just simple & works lovely on the Longbow.

Bsa 1-4x20 is also really nice. Huge field of view & clear. I had to adjust PX to get it to 10yds but great little scope. Nice uncluttered crosshairs, defo not for you if you like mil dots & Xmas tree reticles 🤣

TBH the variables are usually on max magnification & rarely varied. If I hunted Rats I would knock down the mag but otherwise I leave as is.

I am swinging more towards fixed mag TBH, simpler, less to go wrong, better image due to less lenses & less fuss overall. Oh & usually cheaper. As I replace the scopes I will probably go fixed mag & 4x32 is not out of the question on some of the guns.

That Silver Antler served me well & I never really thought about higher mag. I could hit what I aimed at out to 30yds & it just worked.
Thing is, with a duplex it's uncluttered & easy to bracket stuff for distance( more so a Leupy variety) than a 30/30. I think all the cluttered rets do is lose some ability in the field, by "oversimplifying" things.. Big ol' supermag hubbles are just more weight & loss of balance. We know how opinions run though...😊

I use x4 often especially for under 25m. It offers enough of a challenge to group 10 shots into a cloverleaf or within a 5p. Plenty good enough for hunting.

4x32mm scopes are simpler, lighter, clearer and the bonus is that they can be picked up cheaply. I tend to buy period x4 scopes and fit them to equally period rifles as they seems to compliment each other well for performance and looks. Putting a 3-12x50mm on a Longbow would just look out of place.

I do like the Nikko Stirling ones as well as the ASI Japanese so along the way I've picked up about 8 of these to permanently mount them to older rifles. Does a really great job for not a lot of money and it keeps things simple every time you reach for these to shoot.

Here I have a couple mounted to some Webley Longbows. They are just perfect on the BSA Supersports.

I had a bushmaster 4 x 32 on my Leshiy 1 for my barn gun for yonks.. Only ever used it indoors on Ferals from 10 to 20 or so yards and it was a perfect choice for that.. kept everything light and compact

When I was a teen I could only afford a cheapo scope anyway and they worked perfectly well

Is that a fact? Blimey I've not ever heard that before.

I have two Vector Optics Cerato’s (3-9x32) and they are brilliant little scopes. One is on my S200 which l use for close range ratting and it’s excellent.

I think ‘big is best’ is an absolute myth.

I have an old Simmons 8 point 4x32 that I’m planning to use on a vintage bargain that I’m about to buy 😉 a really nice clear scope that will be perfect for a bit of plinking at any range I desire 🤩
