I sometimes used to use an old phone hand-piece (the bit with the speaker and mic) for cuing when I was DJing. Not the mic but the speaker, they can go very loud and are very strong.

A lot of people these days, especially the younger generation have grown up using smartphones, tablets, etc, whilst myself, (and I imagine others on here) grew up without any of this technology.

I think it’s amazing what our phones and other tech can do, but I know what life was like before all this...

Yes, I love having stuff like Netflix in my pocket, with access to virtually unlimited programmes and films, but I don’t recall ever complaining that I didn’t have access to enough films. I managed to watch everything I wanted.

Using Google maps to find my way somewhere is fantastic, but I used to manage to find my way around before all this. I used to drive all over the country, and it wasn’t an issue.

Online shopping is also great, but I remember managing to buy everything I needed from brick and mortar stores without an issue. Plus, we still had mail order back then.

The internet is amazing, but it’s not like we struggled to get by without it.

Having experienced life both with and without this tech, I can safely say life was better without it. The tech provides instant gratification and fulfils ‘needs’ that are only products of the technology in the first place.

Unfortunately, I think it’s too late to do anything about it now. The youngsters don’t know any different, and whilst banning smartphones in schools is a good thing, it will just make them look forward to using them after school even more.

Parents have a responsibility to look after their children - that includes monitoring and controlling their access to phones, screens etc.

There have been several legal cases (US, IIRC) in which the Tech Giants have been accused of deliberately making their products "addictive."

Also, as has been pointed out above, the use of "Smart Phones" to replace navigation skills and so on.

The Government has now - I believe - introduced a statutory ban on phones in Primary Schools.
This is a good start in.pushing back against the tech which is so intrusive.

Bottom line, I reckon is that parents and grandparents have the main responsibility for their sprogs

Has anyone taken the trouble to look at the op. It was just a joke.
And this is a conversation that sprung from it..

We didn't even have a landline all the time I was growing up. On the very rare occasions that something came up with me or my brother that required our mum's presence, the school had to phone the lady over the road, who would then have to go across to knock on our door to get mum to come to the phone. And somehow we both survived.......

I remember our landline number being 4 digits long and area codes only being 2 or 3 digits long. Go on holiday to Cornwall and check in on grandma back in Yorkshire by dialling only 6 or 7 numbers from the payphone. Trying to hear the person at the other end on lontg distance calls over the crackle.

Around 1990 when touchtone dialling came in could get free calls at most payphones by using a beeper gadget... Lift the receiver, hear the dialling tone, it's waiting for you to put money (or a card) in before it will let you dial but put the beeper gadget to the mic and dial the number you wanted instead hehe. Apparently made and sold by a set of uni students. They soon found a way to prevent that working though.

I think we all know that BUT it highlighyed a subject that many think is a joke.
Kids with phones,WHY? As said why would a minor need a phone?
Perhaps we should educate parents, the other evening we went for a meal.we ordered and chatted while waiting.
A family on a near table of 4 parents and 2 kids,say 10 to 12 yrs old.
All 4 of them on phones in complete silence.Ok so they like to catch up on AGF forum BUT its a family night out!
Lastly who sees babies in prams using a phone(ok not making a call!) but still being give this tool, What did our mums do to keep us happy and contented pre mobile phones?
Ok so i am a angry/misarable old man. ;)

I took my old mum out for Sunday dinner, to a pub out in Essex somewhere. An extended family, perhaps 8 or 9 people, adults and children, all on one table. Every. Single. One. Of. Them on some kind of electronic device for the entire meal.....
