Hi there people , after a few suggestions to help keep my sanity, the wife needs a new phone as her one is starting to play up now, lets say she's not technically minded to put it politely , no emails needed , no face ache or social media of any kind needed , just a simple camera , texts and phone call would be enogh , must be able to be able to find stuff easily once she has it working, her brother was out with her yesterday and treated her to a Nokia 106, biggest load of crap going , poor volume really small keys , didn't work hopw it should do , finding stuff would have stressed her out, I can normally figure things out fairly quickly but not on that , no way , I'd be even more stressed as I'd get how do I do this how do i do that about 100 times a day, it was just so f'in awkward to use , I'm fine with normal phones , I'm up in the 20's with the Sansung galaxys without a problem.

So anybody got an easy to use phone that my wife could conquer if I got her one , 3g isn't being switched off for another 10 years over here , thats not to say the network providers won't pull the plug before then , most of the networks in the states seem to have turned 3g off last year from what popped up in searches .

The best I can do is to TRY and ween here onto one of my old Galaxy S4's and remove all the un-needed icons so she won't try connecting to the net , she honestly wouldn't have a clue what she was doing anyway , I haven't got 6 months to explain how you open a website , how you send an email , how you can talk to people abroad free on whatsapp and other normal activities

Talk about stubborn, I won't be able to do that, use that, so I'm facing a losing battle before I start, she used one of my old samsung G600 slide phones for years , she loved it , they're just so old its not much point getting her another used one, she's already gone through my spare collection of them , nothing lasts forever , but technology doesn't exist in my wifes eyes either Homer face palm

If it helps, this is what I’ve been using for a few years now..
I’m 51 and don’t get all this tech thing either.. ✊

Some of the Alcatel phones are pretty bog basic, but with enough features and easy to use as designed for the older person.

I have looked at them (y), she'd think I was taking the "P" if I got her one of the big button phones :ROFLMAO:, it's more the ease of useage we were looking for rather than big number keys , the Nokia was that bad the whole thing wasn't much bigger than 4 1/2", 1.8" screen of something like that with 4 rows of small keys one row of big menu keys . her eyesight is a little bit better than mine , but I couldn't go back to physical keys again, hell, I can't even press a single key on my laptop without poking a few extra editions while I'm doing it Homer face palm
I put the sim into it for her , turned it on, it's not loud enough a choice of about 5 tones , the switch on button failed to work after she decided she was never going to get on with it, I factory wiped it, removed the Sim, It wouldn't switch on again, the button wouldn't do anything after the sim was fitted and after the sim was removed , despite how many times it was pushed , sods law when she took it back it started up straight away , I would love to have been there , take the battery out, put it back in again, then show me how to push the power button again and see if it does what it did last night , it simply refused to turn on, I did say to her don't just get one without asking me , came from one of those cash exchange places , I said how much did they charge for that, £25 used with a charger , I said they're only £15 brand new .

Anyway they gave her a refund so lesson for her learnt , hopefully, I'll try and push her to a smart phone first as I have several just laying about not being used , but with her , she'll think that she won't be able to use one and that will be it, any slight hiccup and it will be my fault , "I told you I couldn't use that "

It would need to be cannibalised near enough, a simple smart phone with near enough 100% screen size , to just want a dialer a text button and a camera on all those screens , I've had Samsungs for so long, only ever strayed to an iPhone once , never went back , just got used to the Sammys , but we've had about 9 or 10 different models over the years , some of their first touch screen editions were pants , I've got a Jet or someything similarly named , that wanted drop kicking down the garden right from day one

I've got an Alcatel Onetouch Pixi 3 that you can have FOC if you think it may be suitable :

My Alactel 3v was only £85 and it is a great phone. I only got a new one due to damaging the charging port ( now fixed due to a new charging board but one component needs taken from the old board and put on the new one , I think that's why there is not sound from the phone . other than that its still working well and I use it as a camera and for music to save the battery on my other phone when out walking.

My wife had the Alcatel 1 and it was a great phone until the battery did not take a charge and died .

Are you sure?

Providers are switching off their networks at different times

Each mobile provider is setting its own timetable for its 3G network switch-off. These timings might change and you should check your mobile provider’s website for the latest update:

  • Vodafone is starting its switch-off this year.
  • EE plans to start its switch-off in early 2024.
  • Three expects to switch-off by the end of 2024.
  • O2 has not yet announced any switch-off plans.
Unless you meant 2G.

2G will be switched off by 2033

All the mobile providers have confirmed to the Government that they do not plan to offer their 2G (and 3G) services beyond 2033.

We expect that mobile providers will start making plans to switch off their 2G networks at some point after they have switched off their 3G networks. None of the providers have set a specific date yet - EE has said it will switch off 2G ‘later this decade’. We will update this advice when more details are available.

Can't say positively 100% , I was looking at phones and getting frustrated as to me it would be ideal , then I think , she'll never work that , so I looked at when phones would become obsolete if things get switched off , as your bit above says 2G (and 3G) by 2033 , seemed to be what it made out was happening , I believe it was more a Government site rather than any phone providers so I realise what the goverment said wouldn't make any difference , I can't even find that link as I can't remember what search I put in to look, searching 3G brings up the link you posted me with all the evidence I need is there in B & W, but as I was saying the states have already dumped the 3G , if nobody is making 3G phones anymore , they'll force you to upgrade anyway so there wasn't any point getting her and old phone that wouldn't work shortly down the line , I'd be back to where I started again then. 😢

@That hurts (y)(y)
Many thanks for you kind offer , I'll politely refuse though, loveley little phone but If I've got to teach her on a touch phone I might as well try on the S4 that I already have, at least I've used that for ages so after a quick referesh I'll be able to sort things out for her when she gets stuck on it, says the S4 is in the 3G list , but all of the S4's I have are all 4g versions so at least she'd be safe for a bit longer, she's on Asda PAYG and they are Vodaphone based , so 3g switch off has already been started , it wouldn't probably matter as they say text and phone calls would still work using the 2G part of it.

Although my phone is 5g already I thinks it's nothing but utter BS ,been on a Virgin contrat for years , did what I needed , when it was piggy backed to EE I managed a 80mb plus download 2 years ago, when it was only 4g/4G+, then they switched to O2 , lucky if I could get 3mb , even when it gets 5G connection I don't think it ever gets near 80mb, that's not 5G speed , I've always hated O2 , so many places I work, even just a mile out of the towm center or so, struggle to pick up a normal phone connection, much less 5G operations , thats the reason I left Tesco mobile many years ago as the signal was always rubbish , my Boss is with Virgin as well , he agrees that O2 are crap, maybe good elsewhere , someone told me there's been a fault for over 6 months in our area , I could quite believe that.

Ive just this second done speedtest on it, no 5G at my house , so 4G signal test download 2.19 mb , upload 1.93 mb, never had such a crap service in all my life . modern technology Ha! Ha! Ha! might as well have two tin cans and a bit of string stretched between them , that always works :ROFLMAO:
