Should I downgrade an M4? or get a new gun?

Hi all,

I find myself stuck with a bit of an issue here and not sure what to do. Right now I have two m4s in Extended set up - one with a Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XL50 on it, the other with a Nocpix 60r. They're both firing about 120 joules with 42 grain ELR slugs. That setup was superb for us while my brother was here and we're primarily going out together looking for pigs, or doing pest control in the garden.

He's now took a job in UK and flown back home, leaving a 2nd pig gun largely gathering dust in the safe.

Given I'm pretty much on my own now I think I probably want to be looking at having a garden gun for playing about and rats and whatnot, and a 'real' gun to go out at night.

The parts from FX are so expensive, its going to be over 600 euros to buy the compact barrel & bottle to downgrade my m4 to that, then I could tune it down to 40 joules or so as a garden gun.

Or should I be looking to get rid of it and go with the drs tactical compact which is half a kilo lighter?

I'm not sure whats the better option. I definitely don't need a lot of power around the garden, and if I had it I wouldn't use it cos of noise/deflection risks...

Not sure how big the rats are but at 40j I’m guessing they’re the same size as the pigs!
Perhaps leave your brothers rifle as is for when he may return and purchase a lower powered rifle for a 3rd of the new parts cost to see to the garden pests 👍🏼

The problem is if I buy a super cheap extra rifle it'll never be as good as the m4 and I'll end up just using that instead lol.

I definitely don't need 40 joules in the garden, most rats will be 20 metres or so but theres the option to see a rabbit or something at 60 metres. I'd rather blow something to bits that Im not going to eat anyway, and have that extra power if I chanced across anything else at longer range.

One benefit of 'downgrading' the M4 over swapping it for something else is the extended barrel/bottle can go in the garage and if anyones back out for 3 days and definitely wants the longer version I can swap it back in an hour or two.
