Shooting in the rain?

I shoot in rain, but I never lets the rifle get wet.. 😁

I was shooting yesterday undercover for a few hours I didn't get wet but my gun felt damp so I still took it out of the stock and wiped it down.alsa got soaked whilst doing hft not pleasant

I use Pro Ferrum too... It's fantastic but it stinks! I'm not sure if I like the smell of it or not! 😁

I wipe off any moisture and leave the gun to come up to room temperature. A wipe over again and then another wipe with the smelly stuff. 🙂
Yup, exactly that 👍🏻

I don't drive so I get dropped off at my shooting permission.

I take a poncho with me when going shooting at the farm. Build a shelter and sit under until it rain goes off or continue shooting under the poncho.

I have an army surplus one and Aldi or Lidl one which is lighter.

If I don't continue to shoot I will put the poncho on and sit under with all my shooting gear and the rifle under it.
If it gets windy I peg it down fully spread out with one edge higher so the rain runs off and slipped under it .

This was me drying it in the sun . It had been used that day as a shower came over. The sun dried it in no time.

One shelter being built when I was out shooting and it started raining

Tied in the middle then pegged down at the front corners and the rear. Enough space to put all me gear in and lie down with the rifle on the bipod . The rabbits were still out so I kept shooting.

Once home I strip the stock off the rifle rifle and give it wipe dry it off then a wipe over with oil .

I have been all of my life in all kinds of weather, when home I put a towel on the radiator to dry and when dry oil well.

I put vaseline on the inside of my stocks and under belly of action.
Been in comps and got rifle so wet it was almost a water pistol.
B4 going home I will shoot an oily felt through barrel
Get home remove stock, dry it and leave to dry inside warm place.

Been toying with a poncho as well.
I got my light weight one from Aldi or Lidl but got one similar on Temu that lives in my wife's wheelchair bag incase it rains when she is out in it.

The army surplus one in the Pic is the 58 Pattern one that clips on the the 58 pattern sleeping bag to make a sleep system. I have a 58 pattern sleeping bag too.
I have had them 30+ years and used them wild camping before we got bivi bags and lighter sleeping bags. . The poncho needing a repair to the waterproof tape round the neck to seal the stitching . I will be buying the sealing tape soon so its good to go. There is a few of the ponchos on Ebay so look at the pics to see if the tape is coming off on those as some of them are from the pics I have seen

I don't shoot in the rain, but have been caught out in the rain. When finished shooting I wipe my gun all over with a towel before putting it in the gun bag/case. Immediately I get home the gun is removed from the bag/case and wiped down again, before being dried at room temperature. I also leave the gun bag open to dry out before I use it again. Don't want to put the gun back in a wet bag. I then wipe the gun all over with ballistol oil.

I have a tin of Youngs gun oil that’s like that, stinks the house out !
I used to go out hunting no matter what the weather was like, nowerdays it’s me that comes home and stiffens up not the guns so do less of it in inclement weather. Still if I’ve been out the gun gets dried before I do

I've never had a gun get wet. If it ever happens, I would would disassemble every bit of the rifle and dry it with paper towels. Then I'd do a relube and reassemble. This is a spring gun, TX200, so it's very easy.

So is everyone just shooting in the rain as they would normal, as long as they dry/oil, or are you under cover and avoiding the rain?

Not usually any cover. If it looks like rain then I don’t take my best gun. If it’s farm stuff in the rain, we’ll that’s what the pump action is for.

im in wales, so its rain in its many forms, on most days. i just de-stock dry and oil the metal, and leave the wood to air dry as well, and keep the gun bags open and hung up to air dry.
seems many people leave wet guns in bags, or store them in wet bags. or have cold guns put away in gun cabinets where condensation gets at them.

My hw30 ratting gun got wet last night, and killed two rats between the showers,it's a work tool.
I previously used beeswax and turpentine furniture wax on the stocks cutouts, sealing the wood.
I just remove the furniture, wipe all parts over with tissue paper, and next morning, lightly oil the action.
I let the gun rest at room temperature overnight before re- assembly.
The wax stops the woodwork from absorbing moisture, which causes the rust on metal, and stabilises the timber, and protecting the whole rifle.

I haven't shot in the rain much since mounting digital day/night scopes which don't perform so well in those conditions, IMO. Still use my wet weather gear though for cold, icy nights and on returning home, mods and bolts are removed immediately - and stock if necessary - because the condensation starts to form immediately. (Same as my specs when walking into a warm pub on a freezing night.) Everything is left to dry out thoroughly before before a wipe over being returned to storage. No problems yet.

On a different note, do we think that rain affects POI!
I find it difficult to believe that raindrops don't affect a pellets path, surely , they must do??
🤷‍♂️
