I understand that it is not possible to pay for air guns via Paypal. Is there another secure payment method?

Yes you are correct ,PayPal do prohibit you from using their platform .
Under UK law , Airguns are Firearms hence they don't allow you use their platform.

What do you mean by secure?
Paying by bank transfer ensures the money goes from you to the seller but if the goods don't arrive you have no recourse.
Cash on exchange for goods after inspection is secure so long as you don't get mugged.
Paying by credit card if over £100 gives you come back if anything is wrong.

It's 100% possible to pay for airguns using that method but it seems they have strange thresholds for blind eye and exception. Look at all the RFDs that have PP as a payment method. If doing it privately, as long as neither buyer nor seller write anything in the comments section making it obvious what it is, they'll never know.
Oh, as an edit, it's just occurred to me you may be talking about getting them to intervene if there's a problem. Obviously not likely with a private transaction.

I mean with recourse for me. I have seen a gun that I would like but it's on an Airsoft site and the users are not rated in any way as they are on this forum. I have also noted that the seller has sold what seems to me to be a lot of items.
Businesses have different terms to what the general public get , that is why they are allowed to use it .
The same way a business with the right business account can send co2 capsule's through most couriers and the general public can't .

Your only recourse with a private sale is to go and get said item you want. Inspect the item and ensure it is what it purports to be and only then hand over the cash.

I think I knew this. I was clutching at straws as I would really like this gun. If it had been on this forum from a trusted member I would be OK. Oh well never mind, probably not worth the risk.

Even on here I think there has been occasions when the seller has been naughty. Yes they get banned but the buyer has still lost out. It is the chance we all take when buying anything.
Even when dealing with companies some have gone bust but are still taking money. There really is nothing 100%.

There has been a few bad apples on the forum (Not so much on this AGF version thankfully ) and they get caught . Members on here will have some one to vouch for them in a lot of cases but even then it can go bad but that is very rare . I have only seen it happen once but on another forum.
You could have some one local to look at the rifle if its a distance sale , Members have done this in the past .
I have even known a member to send the items to the buyer to inspect after taking a deposit or the full cost and then let then buyer send it back if its not what they wanted and gave them their money back.
On another forum , One of the Mods ( He may not have been a Mod then ) set up an Escrow scheme. The seller sent him the rifle and the buyer paid after he had checked it and made sure it was as described in the sales ad and it was working with no faults ,He then sent it to the buyer at the buyers cost .
Expensive cost wise due to the multiple postage but it could have saved you a lot of money if it went bad .
He was a well know member , Wrote for the magazines and his wife owned MTC the scope company .

Cash exchanges in person are my preferred method. Without having to drive miles or you could offer to cover the cost of their fuel and time and have them deliver to you directly.
Failing that I’m old school and for distance prefer cheque. I find that method also builds trust within online communities. Wait for the cheque to clear then receive your goods. I usually also offer a little extra on top for the inconvenience of having to pay a cheque in.
Worked well for me on a lot of aquatic forums.
But in all instances keep all and any correspondence including the for sale add. As all that and the agreement to buy and sell is your contract if it goes pear shaped and you feel inclined to pursue things.

If you’re looking for secure payment methods, I’ve heard good things about antom.com. They handle local and cross-border payment services and seem to focus a lot on security and ease. I’m thinking of switching to them myself because it sounds like a smooth way to manage payments without worrying too much.
