Hi all
Just been down to the club today with my 10 22... Put a silencer on it.... Shoots like a totally different rifle now.. So much fun on turning targets....

Putting a moderator/silencer/can/whatever on the end of a barrel alters the vibration characteristics/harmonics of the barrel due to the mass of the attachment and the moment (leverage) of the mass. If it is a reflex type in contact with the barrel back from the muzzle then there can be an additional effect which in combination with the mass of the attachment can be positive or negative in respect to the accuracy of the firearm. In your case it was positive, good result, use it from now on!

How accurate and reliable are these up to a hundred yds ? interested to know, thanks. using subs.

As an off the shelf rifle extremely poor, that's why you will generally see them as a heavily tweaked unit with a plethora of aftermarket gizmos added to bring them up to scratch.

Stock trigger is incredibly heavy, barrels have loose chambers and tightest spot may not be at the muzzle. Action fit to stock is usually poor. The only aftermarket parts in my gun are the chassis, and extractor - the rest is modified stock parts.

And looking at those impressive group sizes, you nailed it!

To be frank I was rather surprised at how accurate the barrel turned out. Shortened the chamber and cut at the tightest point. I've spent hours with the trigger group to get it down to 700 grams while it still resets. It would have been much easier to just buy parts but where's the fun in it?

I had a 10/22 but never really could gel with it. I can't really put my finger on just why that was. It just wasn't for me, I guess.

What I'd really like to find now is a Marlin Papoose. I think that'd be fun and I could probably even schlep it around backpacking. I could kick myself because a local gun store had one not too long ago. I picked it up, gave it a look, and decided, nah, I don't need it. When I decided a few days later that I did need it, it was sold. See what impulse control gets ya! Never control gun buying impulses! That's the takeaway.

I've had mine a year now, it's far from perfect in feed/cycling but when it's on form it's a really good unit.
Caveat....
I bought it secondhand at an absolute steel of £250, Its got a Volquartsen heavy fluted barrel with brake, also a Volquartsen trigger unit so its about as far from standard as you can get without changing the bolt/reciever.

You'd pay more than £250 for the barrel on its own so you can see two things.
1) Mods don't hold their value.
2) Buy a pimped up secondhand one (because of 1)

Gun shops are awash with secondhand 10/22's and it's easy to spot a knackered, bodged one a mile off.

Me & my shooting buddy brought one at the same time
Mine only worked with Winchester subs, his with Ely subs, his was very accurate, mine not as good but OK, was fun to shoot, I almost fell into the “Let’s make it better” trap, looking round and some of the more intense tuning options meant the only thing that was original was the invoice, I sold it and bought a CMMG AR15
