Hi All,
Recently back into shooting and trying to coax my son into take it up again (he needs something to fill his time and give him a bit of purpose - just turned 18 and just waiting to finish school having completed all of his qualifications). Annoyingly (for me), he was a bit of a crack shot and the Gamo Venari (that I bought on here or the old site I think) proved to be fantastically accurate rifle for such a bargain gun. Having dug it out, I’ve noticed that it has leak from the fill port (I think). I contacted a local shop that said they could sort it but it needs a full service and will cost £180. That’s pretty much what I paid for it and not sure whether it’s worth it when the boy might not take it again. I know that I could have it a spare/second gun if it’s sorted but again, it’s more than just a few quid to chance it on. Just wondered what people’s thoughts are…
Many thanks,
Easytigers

£180 WTF?
Tiz over twice the price I would have thought.
You can just about buy a new rifle for that.

£180 seems mighty excessive for what will likely amount to an o-ring 😅 did they say why it needs a full servicing?
Hey there. They said that once one seal goes, they all need changing (they said they have a usable life of about 5 years) and that’s why it’s a bigger job than I thought. I’m not very good at anything technical etc so just going off what they said.

Hopefully one of the forum experts local to you will be along shortly to offer you their services.

I realise overheads have gone up, but that’s a pretty high price for an arguably simple gun. You have a number of members on here who service guns, some who take on work from RFD’s who just outsource it.

Apparently this particular leak from the fill port is quite common

Get that filling valve kit, roll up your sleeves, watch this and get it sorted in an afternoon. I promise you it'll be simpler than you thought and it'll feel so good to use once you fix it yourself

If anyone is on the Northamptonshire area, that would be much appreciated. I obviously don’t mind paying the going rate and travelling wherever is needed.
You could try @cloverleaf, just north of Oxford. He is in pretty high demand for his repair services so there may be a bit of a wait but I can't recommend him highly enough. You will need to deliver and collect with him though.

Thank you! Really appreciate your time in finding it. Just watched it and it’s really comprehensive. TBH, I can’t state how dire I am at anything technical (I know I’m just being a wuss!) but might give it a go if all else fails!

If your confident with mechanical disassembly & reassembly, depressurisation of contents & residual pressure vessels and have a good understanding of the various airgun workings then recommend owner service. This is especially the case with low cost airguns, it does not make business sense for the retailer to set up a dedicated workshop of high turnover parts, specific tooling, manufacturers documentation and training their gunsmith. Basically their interest is to sell high volumes with the best mark up they can get and then forget. There is a lot of information on the forum and YT videos to help become an owner gunsmith. good luck

Firstly I agree that a full service is preferable, as all the O rings will be of the same age. Having said that you could probably get away with changing the filling valve assembly which is available as per the previous thread links.
After you've been successful with this, it will whet your appetite for the full seal change!

Thanks @Target Popper . However, I must admit that your first sentence made me break out into a sweat! I’m definitely not confident with any of those!!! 😂🤣😂

Most of it was meaningless self important fluff anyway. If there's a leak there's presumably no pressure in the bloody bottle to worry about

And if there somehow is air in there then let's rephrase "depressurisation of contents & residual pressure vessels" as shoot it until it don't shoot no more

I have an FX Impact Mk2 in .177 calibre and it developed a bit of regulator creep and like the OP I was a little intimidated by the thought of working on it. I checked out some YouTube videos and some exploded diagrams and bought an O ring kit to rebuild the regulator, there was enough kit to do the reg 3 times. Once I got into it it was pretty easy and straight forward and after I had finished and the repair had worked I was so proud of myself.

There's an amount of truth in that and personally I'm wary of replacing individual seals whilst chasing leaks as it can be excessively time consuming relative to that spend doin them all and still leaves others in place that are likely close to failure.

If it's leaking from the fill valve this could either be an O-ring in the bush in the gauge / fill valve assy, or the valve pintle itself which is a hard plastic part and should last indefinitely (doesn't dry out like O-rings) but is susceptable to damage from particulate contamination.

The price quoted does sound somewhat excessive, however given that it's a shop and how everything's going through the roof not entirely surprising.

If you decide you don't want to do it yourself and can get the gun to me in north-ish Oxfordshire I'd be happy to take a look; by all means drop me a PM if you'd like to discuss it further :)

Thanks John - appreciate your recommendation as always!
