Range finder

Bought a secondhand Hawke 600 a few years back and its served me pretty well.

Used Hawke come up occasionally and in my experience are excellent.
You can pick up new Chinese multi branded ones online for £60-£100 but no experience of these

What range finders are you using?
Are you using a sub12 rifle ? if so it doesn't really matter, loads available on amazon for cheap money with hundreds of reviews that can be read, you can just use a basic range finder that the golfers use, nothing special needed as the distance you can accurately shoot at is relatively short.

If you're using a FAC air rifle or higher then I would highly recommend a range finder with a built in ballistic calculator, once you've linked it to your phone and added your profile with the required parameters (such as scope height, ammo weight, velocity) the range finder with display your firing solution for you to dial, this is what I have.

I personally use a Sig Sauer Kilo3K and its excellent. Element optics have sort of copied this concept recently and I've heard good things about their Helix 1500 although this doesn't have built in Applied Ballistic exchange capability so you cannot link it to a Kestrel for a full firing solution, where as the Sig does.

Had it for years with no issues . It was £50 on amazon but the price has gone up.

Not confirmed but rumour is they are the same internals as one of the Hawke line of range finders.

If you see anything like this, give it a swerve. This was recommended to me as a cheap 'okay' one. First thing I did was take it to the range and checked each mode and distances. It was out by up to 10% and couldn't make it's mind up even on a fixed reference point, from as little as 20m out to 150m. They did offer to refund me a fiver but I couldn't see how that would make it any more accurate 🤔

It was about £50 and I can see why it would now be about £35 😬

I was genuinely more accurate with a little guess work 🤭

Here goes -
Let's say you spot a rabbit, the "average" rabbit's noggin is x inches in diameter, or ears are x length use this data to range...
At 10x true mag.( most scopes), mildots are 3.6" center/ center @ 100 yards, or 1.8" @ 50 yards... by bracketing the head/ ears you know how far your quarry is. & adjust aim as required. You can adjust mil spacing distance w/ magnification - ie: 5x will be double the value of spacing between dot centers & so forth...@ 5x , c/c of dots will be 7.2" @ 100 & 3.6" @ 50 & 1.8" @ 25...
In parallel, if you hunt, it's a good idea to set up your gun's zero for it's best point blank range ( distance near to far that you can hold spot on & park a pellet into a given size " kill zone" ) - ie: my HW50, shooting a JSB 8.44 Exact, @ 760 fps. will keep all my shots in a less than 5p circle from 8 yards to 33 yards , using a 30 yard zero - scope reticle at 1.25" above center of barrel... Holding " dead center" on target.

Bracketing .

Figure 3: Using the bracketing system in conjunction with the SCB2 crosshair on this MTC Optics scope indicates the crow’s range is (200 ÷ 5 =) 40 metres. The hunter can then take aim using the appropriate aiming mark on the reticle
Take another example – a feeding rabbit. You approximate the top of its body to be 150mm off the grass and can bracket it between three mil spacings. So, 150 ÷ 3 = 50; the rabbit is around 50 metres away. Handily, you can then select the aiming dot or stadia relevant to that distance on your scope’s crosshair to allow for holdover. Easy!

Hawke LRF400, these will range find further than you could ever shoot a sub12…

If it’s for fac then you’ll definitely need something better.

Thank you Chouchin and Paul you guys are stars.....Thats very interesting i did not know this could be done...............I will try it down the range see how I get on as i only hunt to 30m max so it will be easy to practice with different size kill zones. one love ❤️ Ali

Element Helix 1500.

It makes sense for me since it links up well with my chronograph, Element ballistics app and scope.

All depends on what you need from it.
