I've read a few previous posts about this on here but most are pre Brexit.

Has anyone first hand experience of travel in a car to France with a cased 12fpe springer please?

I have just bought a little French house and want to take one of my rifles to plink with........I'm aware hunting with air rifles is banned in France so this is strictly for paper punching.

Do I legally need to declare to border security? I can't find a conclusive answer online.

TIA

Would also be interested in this as I have a villa in Kefalonia and was thinking of driving down next year with a sub 12 pcp, obviously going through more countries.

Would also like to know, as we regularly go to our place in France and would love to shoot there over the longer ranges available. I read up on it this year but chickened out as I didn't really have time to prep and make the necessary arrangements.

As far as I could tell, you just need to let the ferry company or Tunnel know?

Thread here .

Air rifles are permitted in France without license if <20 joules.

It is best to have proof of purchase when traveling with an air rifle, especially for inspection before boarding on the ferry.

Watch the laws re scopes I know from a greek friend at college they were reserved for military /on ticket..way back then .

Search 'fusile d'air comprime' if you like, but 2 to <20J simply requires that you are over 18 and you have an identity card (or passport). However you may be asked to demonstrate that it meets those requirements by someone and a test certificate would be sensible with the force stated in Joules, not ft lbs. No problem with telesights at all. Just bring it over in the car boot; you don't need to specially declare it.

Id buy one there and leave it there. Iirc rats and mice are the only live things you can shoot legally with an air rifle.
A nicely tuned 97k in .22 or .20 would be my gun of choice.

Can't help with the border crossing but once you're in France, under 20-Joules and being over eighteen (with proof of both 😉😂) is enough.

However, transporting the gear has restrictions: gun, locked up with trigger lock or inside a hardcase and ammunition in a separate container. The idea is that you couldn't use your air-arm without some deliberate delay... You also need to have a good reason to be carrying it around, ie going to a range or coming back from it. Pretty unlikely to get stopped for that unless someone rats in you.

Easiest would be for you to buy one in the country and leave it at your house there for your use.
Strictly no hunting with air-arms over here, not even rodents. If you get caught, 🤬😨.

Thanks for the extra input gents, all that makes sense.

Has this changed recently, I ask because I've a friend who lives and shoots in France and he told me a good while ago that rats and mice were OK with an air gun.

Nope, no killing whatsoever with air powered guns. Poison and traps, yes.

But who's to know what you do on your own property 😉. Just don't get caught.

I thought buying one over here would be difficult because I didn't think target air rifle shooting was that popular, but seems I was wrong. Can't find anything second hand, but to get an idea of what is available look at 'meyson.fr' under the section 'Tir de Loisir' and then 'carabine à plomb'. Dozens of them at 19.9J 4.5mm and seem pretty cheap as well. Didn't find an HW, although it is listed. These can be posted to your address I think, but didn't look into the details. I have used this company for buying Browning chokes without problems. Another I have used is 'roumaillac.com' but haven't looked there.

I’ll have a look thanks. I guess it makes sense to buy one locally to take advantage of the small power increase we’re allowed.

This may well be of interest to you.
Specifically the bottom of the page on export.

A better place to look for online service is Armurerie Auxerre.
Fast and reliable service.
But if dealing within the EU, Sports Waffen Schneider, in Germany, Mundilar, in Portugal, Krale, in the Netherlands become very accessible. All four are trustworthy, SWS having the the most comprehensive range within 'F' limits available to export to France, the other three for up to 20J.

Thanks for that tip @JacquesC . I've had a look at the Sportwaffen Schneider site. Couldn't get the language option to English but in French it told me a 20J spring for my HW97k will be €25 plus delivery. Seems Germany is still on a 10J limit?

'F' is 7.5 J limit over there.
France moved up from 10 to 19.9 J a few years ago.

If you use Firefox to browse SWS, you'll find just about any language available, but have to revert to German to actually order. 🤷🏻‍♂️
