Polishing a Turd..... reprise

Interesting to see how both the cockimg arm and end block assembly on these look very similar to an HW99 and how the trigger looks quite like the old Webley Vulcan/Excel/Tracker design

I have an old B2 that I have been messing with on and off for a few months and found many of the same problems, the barrel being the worst part by far

As in this thread I wanted to shorten it a little then add a cocking aid/air stripper so lopped a few inches off the end only to find that while the rifling starts and ends central to the barrel itself it wanders off by a good 2 to 3mm exactly where I chopped it, I am no engineer so have no idea how this is even possible as the barrel itself is actually straight? my solution is to eventually change the barrel to a spare bsa one I have but have to wait a while as don't have access to a lathe or the skill to use one

Strangely enough I also own a Kasu junior rifle which is the same thing but smaller and made in India (I think) that one has none of the problems mentioned and shoots well although its way too hard to cock for a junior rifle eg the same as the b2 but with less leverage due to the shorter barrel

THE STOCK......

The quality of the wood is PANTS... that is a statement that will resonate with EVERY one of you chaps who decided to strip the orange brown paint off the wood to see if we have a chunk of tigger beech under the lacquer.... WRONG... The screw fixings too.. horrible NASTY steel with cheese consistency heads that split and splinter when you try to do owt with them...

Nasty wood, split wood, filler and a total lack of anything that would even resemble owt half decent......

So I decided to modify the stock (with warts and all) into summat that may resemble a piece of char grilled timber (sui sugi ban).. but only after I have got the rasp, linisher and drum sanders on it...

Ha... and now... the best bit.... setting fire to it with a blow torch....
View attachment 20398View attachment 20399View attachment 20400View attachment 20401View attachment 20402View attachment 20404

And after a good wire wooling of the charred surface..... a few coats of oil to seal in the finish....

I have purposefully left the splits in the wood as a reminder of the quality of the timber and as a feature..

I was considering a section on the trigger but I may just leave that as an addendum... as there is virtually nothing you can do to maker it better... BUT I did try..

The best and most informative technical airgun piece I have ever read, and could be applied to any springer! Many Thanks Mate!

Heyup bflat7, thank you . That's much appreciated.

Hal, what a fantastically illustrated and simply documented process of how to improve any airgun !
Ive really enjoyed the thread as it's demystified a few steps for me.
Just out of interest and reflecting on your other thread Expensive vs. Cheap guns, how much would this amount of effort be in pounds and pence to elevate a £50 rifle into something acceptable?

Heyup Zoltan.. thank you for your kind words..

The cost... How long is a piece of string...???

When we work on out own rifles, its a labour of love and cost hardly ever comes into the equations... IF and when you do do owt for somebody else, you have to try to put a value on your TIME and not particularly the actual job in hand..

I have used the Westlake B2 for this 1st EVER attempt at the rifles accuracy using the cheapest scope, mounts and pellets.. its only at 7 yards.... and the card is THINNER than a playing card...

BUT it shows that it can be done....

I can't believe I missed this thread 🤦🏻‍♂️ I am truly in awe of your engineering prowess @deleted member
For those newbies to the forum a few years ago a guy who shall not be named claimed to be able to customise our favourite little Chinese plinker to create a rifle with high power properties and capable of outshooting rifles cost 10x more
When asked for proof of these claims little or none was forthcoming (the poor GUY didn't last long 🤭)
Here we have Hal who not only puts his money where his mouth is but gives you a step by step explanation Inc pics
Well done buddy 👏👏👏

THE ADDENDUM.....

The trigger is worst than a trebuchet mechanism.... PERIOD..... BUT it was possible to polish some of the mating steel surfaces to get them smoother... and to stop the trigger spring from grating over the high spot on the trigger steel.

The dremel and diamond burr was taken to the angled section of the trigger steel and a groove ground in to allow the spring to work inder compression rather than flexed compression. This smoothed out the pulling of the trigger blade and there was a very slight improvement to the actual release of the compressed piston.

However... the trigger is still crap... Just saying it as it is....

And so now..... the B2 looks like this......

Gentlemen... I hope you enjoyed this little presentation and I sincerely hope it gives YOU the impetus and desire to tinker with your own rifles...

Thank you for your time and patience...

Hal
After a hour reading that, you certainly have some skills. I need a couple of things making in the near future, and seeing your username I guess your in Halifax? So not a million miles away from me is it ok to message you to get your number and pick your brains please?
Regards Baz 👍🏻
